Chapter 18

Hayley’s POV

I could feel tears pricking at the corners of my eyes, but rubbed them away. He’s doing it again, I thought to myself hopelessly. Leaving and running away from our problems. There had to be an explanation for her vision. It wouldn’t come true because I trust Caden. He wouldn’t hurt me. I know he wouldn’t.

But he can’t seem to believe that.

I balled my hands into fists and made my way back to the house.

“Jake?” I muttered so low that I barely heard myself. I had forgotten about him completely over the last couple of days. All I was busy thinking about was Caden and I. I suddenly felt a pang of guilt.

There’s no way I could be with Jake now. Firstly it’s because I’ve betrayed him too much to even be forgiven for it. And secondly, my feelings for Caden are unbreakable. Even if I tried, I can’t ignore the feelings I have for him. With or without this prophecy thing, I’ll still always have feelings for him.

“Yeah. He came by looking for you.” Kent continued, looking at me weirdly. “We were all looking for you. Where were you?”

“I just went out.”

“Now, you’re lying.” He said and pulled me into a tight hug. “Don’t run off like that again. Okay?

“Okay.” I mumbled into his chest.

“Where’s Caden?”

With him bring up his name caused another wave of sorrow to wash over me. If I told him about what Madam Chloe had said, he’d keep Caden away for as long as he can. Even if they seem to hate eachother, Kent and Caden have the same way of thinking.

I tried hard not to let my voice crack. “He left.”

“Did he happen to say where?” Kent asked.

I shook my head.

“Come on.” He said, pulling me into the house. “I don’t think you’ve met Peter yet, have you?”

“No. Is he here?”

“Yep. But he was just about to leave so you showed up at a good time.”

Kent guided me to the living and on the couch were everyone. Jasper and Kandice were on one couch together while Leonel and Peter sat on the other side across from them. Peter had on a brown sweater and black pants. He had short brown hair with the softest brown eyes. He looked kind compared to the rest of them.

The four of them looked up at me when I came in. Their eyes assessed me before Peter got to his feet and stuck out a hand. “I’m Peter. You must be Hayley.”

I smiled and grabbed his hand. “Yeah, it’s—“ I snatched my hand away quick when I felt something from his hand. It was the exact feeling I felt when I had touched Kent’s scars.

Nervously, I clasped my hands together behind my back. “Hi. Nice to meet you.”

“Likewise.” He gave me an odd look before flashing me a brief smile. “Kent told us about your…abilities.”

I glanced over at Kent and scowled at him. He promised not to tell any of them.

“It’s nothing to worry over.” Peter assured me. “We just want to see how it works.”

Leonel tipped his head to the side. “It’s quite an extraordinary abilities for a mere nephlim.”

“I doubt she can do much of anything.” Jasper added.

“Shut up you two.” Kandice snapped. “Hayley go ahead and show him.”

I squeezed my fingers together until it turned white. “I can’t.”

“Why not?” She asked.

“I don’t remember how I did it.” I mumbled. That was a lie…

Kent put a hand on my shoulder. “When she kissed me. That’s how she gave me my wings back.”

Peter scratched the back of his head. “That’s rather…odd. And there was no other way?”

“Or she can touch your marks from your wings.” Kent answered from behind me and started to chuckle. “You know what’s funny is that I thought she was the prophecy girl at first.”

No one laughed with him. Their eyes fixed on me.

“That’s not possible, is it?” Leonel asked.

“It shouldn’t be. Peter, tell us it isn’t.” Kandice said.

“The girl from the prophecy.” Peter said dazedly. “That’s amazing. I’m standing in the presence of the prophetic nephlim.”

“This girl is nothing, Peter. She can’t be…” Jasper protested.

I took a step back from their gazes, only to bump into Kent. “I have to go.” I said quickly, rushing towards the door. I could hear Kent calling for me, but I refused to turn back.

I told him not to tell anyone about what I did for him and he did the exact opposite!

I hate all of this. Caden left again, Kent can keep his mouth shut, and I’m this damned prophecy chick! None of this would be happening right now if it wasn’t for…

I balled my hands into fists at the thought of him.

It was his entire fault that all of this is happening. It’s all Egan’s fault. He deserves what coming to him.
