Caden’s POV

I crossed my arms over my chest, staring at her retreating figure from afar. When I had approached Astarte again about what she said, she refused to speak to me the whole walk here.

Tainted. What could she mean by that? Astarte’s words still hung in my mind and I couldn’t simply let it go. That could mean anything. But how she said it…I know its bad news. I can’t help but think it has something to do with the prophecy.

I watched her knock on the door and after a few knocks, it finally opened. And I couldn’t believe who opened it. Hayley.

Hayley’s POV

I stood in front of her, blocking her way in. “Who are you again?”

“Astarte.” She repeated with a little annoyance. She may have looked young but her voice sounded like she was older. Much older.

Yes, she was beautiful. Extremely actually. With her fair blond hair and sparkling blue eyes. But how the heck did she know Kent? Was she an angel too?

“That name doesn’t sound familiar.” I told her, putting a finger to my chin. It wasn’t like I was lying. Kent really never had spoken about an Astarte.

She crossed her arms over her full chest. Wow. She looked like some kind of model in that blue tanktop and short shorts. She looked literally like the perfect woman. “Why are you being so difficult?”

I started to get sick of her for some odd reason and mimicked her. “’Why are you being so difficult’?”

“You—“

“Hayley, who is it?” I heard Kent ask. Before I could stop him, he barged between me and the door to get a look at the visitor. “Uh...hi…”

“Hi, my name is Astarte.” She smiled shyly and blushed. But I could see it was all fake. It was totally for show. But why would she fake it?

“Kent…” Kent replied.

“Can I come in?” I heard her ask.

“Yeah. Sure.”

Kent shoved me aside, trying to make way for her. I pushed him away from me angrily. What was up with him? First he opens the door to a complete stranger, now he’s being completely rude? While Astarte made her way to the couch, I pulled on Kent’s arm and dragged him aside. All the while, his eyes stayed glued on her. “Kent!” I hissed.

He blinked a couple of times and turned to me. “What?”

“Do you even know who that is?” I demanded.

“She said her name was Astarte.”

I slapped his forehead. “Idiot. No duh! She said that. I mean, did you know her before meeting her just now?”

“No.”

“Well, there you go. You know, you shouldn’t invite a stranger.”

“It doesn’t matter. She’s hot, Hayley.” He answered.

“So, you just go inviting random hot females into Jasper’s house? Angel or not, that’s crazy! What if she’s a prostitute?”

He furrowed his brows. “What’s a prostitute?”

“Are you fucking kidding me?” I murmured more to myself than him. “Whatever. Do what you want. I don’t care.”

“Fine.” He turned around and sauntered over to her. They started chatting.

I rolled my eyes and made my way into the kitchen. I don’t care. I really don’t. If he wants to make out with a complete stranger, I don’t give a fuck. It’s not like he’s my problem. I jumped onto the counter top with a sigh. Who am I kidding, I do care. I just hope he doesn’t do something stupid that he’ll regret.

I looked at my hand that was still bandaged and frowned. That brings back some awful memories. Why did I even do this? I slowly unwrapped the bandage and tossed it into the trash bin. Glancing back at my hand, I realized the scars were gone. There was still blood. A lot as a matter of fact. But the scars and pain were gone. Maybe it was my powers? I don’t know…

I jumped off the counter and made my way back into the living room. I should just quit moping around and do something about that girl. There’s something about her that doesn’t sit well with me.

Once I made it into the living room, I found Kent in a lip lock with Astarte. My mouth fell open instantly. “Kent, what the fuck do you think you’re doing?”

My voice didn’t even affect him because he didn’t turn around or pull away or anything. It’s like he totally disregarded me completely. Angry, I walked over and pulled at the girl’s arm. When our skin made contact, I felt heat pour from my fingertips. It was just a little, but seeing as she jumped away violently, it must of affected her a lot more. She started to scream in pain. A scream that could probably make someone’s ears bleed. It was as if she was scratching a chalk board with her nails. Then she fled out the door.

Not even trying to make sense of what happened, I stepped in front of Kent and slapped him. Hard. “I warned you, you idiot.”

I noticed Kent’s eyes were glazed over for a moment until he registered that slap I’d given him and put a hand to his cheek. “What was that for?”

“I told you not to invite her in. Did you even listen to one word I had said?” I asked him. I was no longer angry. More like, bewildered. Kent just seemed so…out of it just now. What did that girl do to him?

Kent shook his head guiltily. “I only remember opening the door. And…nobody being there.”

I gaped at him. “What? You don’t remember Astarte?”

“Astarte?”

“Yeah, As---“ I stopped myself. This isn’t going to get me anywhere. Just who was that girl?

Caden’s POV

“That bitch burned me!” She snapped again. “I’m going to kill her.”

“Burned you? Who?” I asked her, raising a hand over her wound. I whispered a minor healing spell that Egan had given me after he sent me off with Astarte to take care of the others. He had told me he would get more spells like this one later for me. But they were going to be more powerful. I didn’t bother to ask where he got it from.

“Hayley! Well, that was what the blonde one had called her.” She told me a little more calmly since most of her wound had been healed up. Her arm was really in bad shape. The skin had turned completely black and started to swell up. I think it reached the bone since it’s taking longer than usual to heal.

“She burned you. Are you sure she wasn’t a redhead?” I asked. It just doesn’t make sense. How could Hayley just…burn someone? A demon, at that.

“I’m sure.” She growled and pulled away from me. “I’m going to kill her. And I know just how to do it.” She smirked up at me.

I gulped. Damn it, Hayley.
