I tossed and turned in Phil's bed, which seemed to be way too uncomfortable tonight. I always knew I was too old to sleep with a stuffed animal at the age of thirteen, but I reached across the bed to retrieve Phil's lion to hug for comfort.

I was just about to grab it, but my elbow buckled and I fell on top of a sleeping Phil, who immediately woke up.

"Dan? What are you doing up?" He asked. I looked into his deep blue eyes that shone as the light from the other side of the door leaked into the room, and I blushed, glad he couldn't see it. "Sorry. I was just, reaching for y-your lion," I said, feeling like an idiot.

Phil smiled. "You could've just asked."

"But I didn't want to wake you up."

"I wouldn't have minded."

"Still."

We went back and forth until Phil reached over to grab the lion. He was just about to get it when his fingers slipped and the lion fell off the bed and onto the floor. Phil sat up to retrieve it but I stopped him.

"You don't have to get it, I don't need it that bad," I said. "Are you sure?" He asked, and I nodded.

"Do you still want something to hug?" He asked and my cheeks turned redder. "Um, sure," I said. I could see his smile widen as he quickly wrapped his arms around my torso and I fell back onto the bed.

"Phil, what are you doing?" I asked.

"You wanted to hug something, right?"

"Yeah, but I didn't mean..."

His smile faded as he let go and picked up the lion from the floor. "Here you go, then. Goodnight, Dan," he said and turned over to go back to sleep.

"Thanks, Phil," I said and tried to fall back asleep.

Another half hour passed, and I was still wide awake. I thought of ways to fall asleep, then finally gave in to my desires.

I set the lion at the foot of the bed, reached over and hugged Phil tight enough so that he might wake up.

Phil turned over. "I thought you wanted the lion," he said.

"Eh, I like you better."

Phil smiled and hugged me back. I buried my face in his neck and he placed his chin on top of my head. "This is comfortable," I said. "We should do it more often."

Phil nodded in agreement. "Now go to sleep, Dan. It's 3am."

I smiled. "Okay."
