On my eighteenth birthday, I woke up with the revelation that I needed a job. 17 years of sitting idly by while friends began their lives had taken its toll on me, suddenly and all at once.

I asked Zachary first, who worked at a local gas station in town, as I checked out my first legal pack of cigarettes.
"Why not ask Sky? Her parents-can I see an ID(here I proudly displayed my newly minted legality)-are looking for a maid after all."
I thought about this, pocketing my purchase. Sky's family had recently fired their old maid, a woman in her late 60's, for stealing from her parents. Working for a friend had never occurred to me before.
"And besides, wouldn't it fulfill little Rosie's dream?"
My face grew warm and I looked away.
"What do you mean by that?" I asked, feigning ignorance. He grinned at me, his teeth whiter than his pale skin.
"You would get to be with Sky's mom a whole lot, wouldn't you?"
My heart pounded in my chest, but I rolled my eyes.
"She's old news," I tell him, heading for the door.
"Your first love never goes away," he called after me. I slammed my car door shut and rested my forehead on the steering wheel. After a minute, I pulled out my phone and called Sky.

I picked Sky up from the high school. She had been at softball practice. She threw her bag in the back seat and slid in next to me. I laughed as she kissed my cheek and leaned her head on my shoulder- her own familiar greeting. The girl had always been affectionate, to me especially. Since that night I had knocked on her door, she began to favor and follow me around like a child. Consequently, I felt incredibly maternal towards her.
"What's the occasion, boss?" She popped a stick of gum in her mouth.
"I need a job, Sky." I pulled out of the high school parking lot. Sky waved at a few of her friends who were walking on the side walk, heavy backpacks slung over the shoulders. They waved back.
"You're in luck, Rosie, my family happens to be hiring a maid."
"So I've heard."
"Do you care to be my care taker?" She laughed at her own joke, and I couldn't help but join her.
"You're old enough to look after yourself," I tell her, still laughing.
"Then what is it you desire?"
"I just need a job," I sighed. The car is quiet for a minute. She stares at me, biting her bottom lip; thinking.
"I mean, you can probably clean up around the house. I can't promise there will be a lot to do for you, Rosie. We tend to take care of ourselves."
I shake my head, smiling back at her.
"No, no, don't worry about that. I just need the money."
She nodded, her face serious for a moment. Then she looked up coyly at me through her lashes.
"I can always make messes for you to clean up."
She laughed at my face, leaning back into me.
"I've got my own messes, Sky," I said after a while, gripping the steering wheel.
Our conversation died out after that. She looked out the window and began to count mailboxes aloud.
