Christmas.
When was the last time I felt the spirit of Christmas? I don't even know. Maybe 9 or 10 years old? I don't really remember. Maybe because I am getting older that I see more of reality. Santa Claus doesn't really exist, nor does his pet reindeers. Jack Frost? Do you really believe in that fairytale?
Now don't hold it against me. Like all of you, I am very fond of fairytales. In fact, I like all stories of Disney. Wait, why am I rambling away? I took my phone out of my pocket and called her.
"Hey Marie! Where on earth are you? I've been waiting here for hours already!" I grumbled.
"I'm coming! Promise! There's— I just encountered a slight problem. But I'm near!" She rattled.
"Go faster! I am starting to feel cold." I complained.
"Okay. Bye!" And she ended the call.
Oh Marie. When are you going to be on time?
I took a deep breath to calm myself and sighed. I looked around my surroundings. You could really say Christmas is different here in Philippines. I mean where else can you see people putting up Christmas decors from September? And Christmas songs, you could hear them everywhere. Not that I'm complaining though, I like it.
It was already starting to get dark. And more people were starting to pour in the park. I checked the time on my phone and shook my head. Not even a single text message from her. Maybe I'll just—
Out of nowhere, a cup of coffee suddenly appeared in front of me.
"Uhm, hi." Said this stranger.
"Uh hi. Uhm, do you need anything?" I asked him.
"Uhm, I overheard you were starting to feel cold so I bought you some coffee."
"O-kay. You know I appreciate it but I don't accept offers from strangers." I told him. He's a weird one, but he looked kind of decent though.
"Zac."
"Huh?"
"My name is Zac. And don't worry, I didn't put anything in it. Trust me." He said and smiled. I don't know, there's something in his smile that I didn't even realise I was smiling back at him.
"Daphne." I introduced myself and took the coffee he was still holding out. He took a sit beside me.
"Hm, nice name. So, what are you doing out here?" He asked me.
"I'm waiting for someone. And she's taking forever!" I swear I'm going to kill Marie. I've been waiting for hours.
"Oh, I see." He nodded.
"How about you?"
"Ah. Let's see, getting some fresh air perhaps?" He may not tell, but he is obviously going through something. Just by the way he was gazing into the distance.
"Ah."
"Yeah." We looked at each other and laughed at the same time.
"Look, I kinda find it weird sitting and chatting with a boy I just met and now I'm laughing with him. Which is pretty getting weirder..." I told him. "... but it's surprisingly a nice feeling at the same time."
"Likewise." Tsk, really a man of few words.
Hours passed. I didn't even realise it was already almost midnight. Our conversation was going deeper and interesting maybe that's why I didn't notice the time. I didn't expect this. As much as I hate to end it, I need to go.
"Uh, Zac. I need to go." I told him.
"Now?"
"Yes. Why not?" I laughed and so did he.
"No reasons. Anyway, I'll walk you home?" He offered.
"No need. I can handle myself. And it wouldn't be good if Dad sees you. All hell will break loose especially if he discovers I only just met you today."
"Strict parents?" He chuckled.
"Not really. That's just my imagination." I laughed. "Okay then, I'll go ahead. It's Christmas eve so I have to be home. You know, family traditions. You go home as well. Your parents might be looking for you as well. It was nice meeting you by the way."
"Likewise. My pleasure." Zac answered. I stood up and started walking away.
"Oh! Merry Christmas!" I shouted. He smiled and waved at me. I waved back and went home.
