I open my eyes. Rain is pattering against the window, but we're safe inside. I shift my legs under the covers to readjust by position. It's so warm here, having fallen asleep entwined with my boyfriend the night before... But it's something special today, isn't it?
My heart skips and my eyes fly open. I sit up straight in our bed and cry, "DAN!"
He runs in, hobbit hair, still only in his boxers, eyes wide.
"What's wrong, Phil?"
"It's Christmas!"
"Oh for f-Phil! I thought you were in pain or something! I was setting up the.. Never mind. Come and see."
He shakes his head as I swing my legs out of bed and he takes my hand.
"Wait, Christmas jumpers!"
Dan sighs but is grinning. "Fine then." We pull on our jumpers that we used for our Christmassy gaming video and he leads me into the living room. Our tree is there, glinting, all the different colours winking at us. But the thing I am really focused on is the large pile of presents underneath. Someone has built a perfectly proportioned pile, wrapped each one beautifully, each with a tag saying 'Philly' on it.
"I had some last minute wrapping to do. I forgot about some stuff. I would have stayed in bed but... yeah," says Dan, letting out an anxious laugh. I let my hand fall from his and slip it round his waist instead.
I have to have a few goes of speaking before I can say,"Thanks, it looks great, Dan."
A smile of relief breaks over his face. "Well aren't you going to open one?"
"I'll make us breakfast first. Then I'll show you your presents," I tell him. He nods and smiles and watches me fondly make us both cereal, and make us both tea in the Christmas themed mugs.
We eat watching the fire and then I tell Dan to wait. I come back with a bundle of parcels in my arms and set them beside mine under the tree.
"All right, you go first," Dan says, grinning.
I take the one off the top and open it. I laugh. A soft toy, a blobfish, stares at me from my lap. It's adorable! I hold it close, my eyes no doubt sparkling because it's so unorthodox but so fluffy! Its own eyes stare at me, possibly worried I'll hate it.
"It's a blobfish," says Dan unnecessarily but helpfully. "They're the ugliest animal on the planet and I felt sorry for it."
"Aw, I think it's cute," I say happily. "Thanks, Dan." I lean forwards and kiss him briefly on the cheek.
His eyes flick downwards as he murmurs, "Are you going to do that for every gift?"
"Maybe," I smile mischievously.
He unwraps one of mine next and whoops. It's a phone case I found on a weird website; black with stars inside.
"I thought it reflects your personality," I say.
"It's so cool! Thanks, Phil! Oh my God! I love it!"
He grips me and kisses me fiercely, and I giggle as we break apart. He fetches his phone and immediately puts it on.
We have a lovely morning unwrapping our presents. I love every single one, but none as much as Dan.
After our dinner together, we try out our new games and finish off in the late afternoon eating, watching the television and sending out tweets. All the lovely messages from the Phandom have made me feel all warm inside. We really are so lucky to have such wonderful people behind us and each other.
There's no sign of snow but the rain has stopped outside. The fire keeps the room aglow and toasty. I have my legs over his, our hands are clasped, and his head on my shoulder. People ring. Our parents, Martyn, other family members, and we try not to spend too long talking to friends like Louise. She tells us about the new beauty things she received and we both pretend to know what she's talking about! Other friends too of course, though some are in different time zones and we can't have a proper conversation with them. It's so nice knowing you're loved by so many. Dan and I spend a lot of time looking at people's drawings of us at Christmas that have been sent to us on Twitter. Some make us both blush. All the uses for tinsel!
The daylight dwindles and we're both not hungry enough for a proper meal. Instead I make us more tea and we sit again, I'm sure both feeling slightly sleepy but not wanting to admit it.
"I love you," Dan mumbles, his eyes slightly closed, his hand still in my own.
"I love you too," I tell him, and I see a smile appear on his face before he falls asleep. "My Dan," I whisper in his ear, and I pull a blanket over us both so I can join him.
