For twenty years,

She owned a bird cage,

plated in gold,
decorated in pearls.
It was locked with a crystal lock.
And the key,

She never remembered when she put it.
And she did not have to worry about it.

Most who passed by the cage,
admired the exquisite details of the pearls,
and the brightness of the gold.

but no one,
no one saw the bird,
the tiny bird, as blue as the spring sky.

Only the girl did,
she had bought a cage,
she thought was befitting of her precious bird.

Then a stranger came along,
he said, "what a beautiful bird,"

For the first time, having her bird noticed,

Overjoyed,

the girl replied triumphantly,
"You can hold it if you want,"

"I would be honored to," the stranger smiled.

Swept off her feet, the keys appeared.
Inside of the mouth of the blue chested bird.
it walked towards the edge of the cage,

and dropped the crystal keys in her hand.

she opened it and held the bird,
close in her palms.

Dearly,

"There," she reached out and handed it.

But the stranger's hands were too far apart,
the bird,
comfortable in it's gold cage,
never learning how to fly-

fell through the palms of a stranger.
and it shattered,
into unrecognizable pieces.

"Oh," the stranger claimed,
"What a pity,

it wasn't as fancy and strong as the cage though-"
