With author's notes, the author is simply having a little time with their readers. Telling them about future updates and informing them on things that may interfere with their writing schedules.
I would say to read authors notes because the author may have something very important written in there. Plus, I know, from experience, that there is always that one person who skips the author's notes, and then asks the author about exactly what the writer had just informed you about.
But then there are the writers that have extremely long author's notes, most of the time filled with nonsense, and in that case, you can't blame people for not reading them!
I've seen some cases where the authors notes are longer than the chapter itself, and that is ridiculous.
Usually, author's notes say something along of the following examples guidelines:
1) Thanks for reading, yet again, another chapter! Don't forget to comment and vote to let me know how I'm doing so far! Xx
2) So guys, I'm sorry to inform you that I won't be updating that often anymore because __________, but I've uploaded this chapter you all. Vote and comment! Please, I love to know how I'm doing. Love you guys! :)
3) So what will happen next chapter? Will ____ fall for _____? Is ____ alive? Who killed her? What is ____ up to with that letter he left for ______? Let me know your thoughts in the comments, or simply click the vote button! See you next update which be on _____.
4) So I'm on my way to_____, but I decided I would update for you all! Tell me what you think!
5) Plenty of drama on this chapter, and there is still more to come! Stay with me the story isn't over yet! Vote and comment! :)
You see how those authors notes are short, sweet, and to the point? That's what you want to do, use the acronym K.I.S.S. Which stands for "keep it simple, stupid".
Sometimes, I add a little more in my author's notes, usually about something big that has recently happened with me or some big news about One Direction (since I mainly write fanfictions), but you can write whatever you want in your author's notes, just don't make it too long because the shorter they are, the bigger the chance of the reader actually reading the whole thing.
This was a really short update, because there is nothing else really to say. Next update will be about story characters so if you're struggling, keep reading!
Love you all!~Chicago_Livin'
