The government starts making clones of people. The first clone is a person named Mondy who ends up becoming an outcast in their world as Mondy doesn't fit in with society's predetermined characteristics of a woman or a man. Mondy is a mistake in society's eyes and they are cast out thinking their the only one like this. Because of this Mondy isn't seen as having a gender.
