age 9

Phil was always independent, even at the young age of 9.

He sat on the bottom of the old and mostly broken slide at the local playground. It was in the very back, therefore no one really noticed it, let alone went on it. All the other children preferred to frolic on the seesaw or the creaking metal swing, flying up and hoping not to fall. But that was exactly what the little raven haired boy liked about it, how only he would go there.

The pale yellow slide was only ten feet away from a large draping willow tree, that shaded the spot perfectly from the heated sun of summer. The tree was a calming object for Phil, it was a place to climb and hide whenever he was feeing stressed or sad.

It wasn't that Phil was lonely, he just enjoyed spending time alone on his slide. He could lie there read for hours on end in his freetime, or do his homework in seclusion from the wild children who ran frantically around.

Currently he was reading a book, his lanky legs hung over the edge, the novel rested in his lap. He was so peaceful, his bright eyes quickly scanning the pages as if nothing else in the world mattered.

Without Phil knowing what hit him, another small figure came crashing down the slide and directly into Phil. He tumbled to the ground, the book flying off his lap as he rolled into the grass.

Dan didn't think anyone was on the bottom of the slide. He saw an open slide where he didn't have to wait his turn, so he went down with no hesitation.

Now, Dan sat on the ground a couple feet away from the victim he had  plowed into.

"Watch who's on the slide before you go down it!" Phil said, his young voice high pitched with a hint of irritation.

Dan sighed, as he already didn't want to like the boy. It wasn't his fault really, the other boy was so quiet and just sitting there. I mean, who just sits at a playground that's full of kids and places to run?

"Sorry, but maybe you shouldn't sit on slides. They are made to be slid down, not sat on." The brown haired boy rolled his eyes, his arms crossed as he stood up.

"My slide is meant to just be sat on, not slid on." Phil protested, grabbing his book off the ground and shaking the dirt off.

"Your slide? Your name isn't on it!" Dan said tauntingly, his tongue sticking out.

"Want to bet?" Phil raised his eyebrows, before sauntering over to the slide. He pointed to a spot, smiling smugly. Sure enough, 'Phil' was deeply carved into it.

"Well Phil, it's still not your slide!" Dan said loudly, trying to convince himself he was still right.

"Well my name is on it, so it's my slide." Phil crossed his arms defiantly.

Dan grumbled something, grabbing the nearest and sharpest stick.

"What are you doing?" Phil inquired, trying to peer over his shoulder.

"Just wait, Philly.." Dan said, as he bit his lip in determination. About an inch or two away from Phil's engraving, Dan carved his name in. It was a but sloppy and unevenly written, it was clearly his name.

"Dan's your name?" Phil asked, seeing him nod. "Well why'd ya carve your name in my slide?"

"Well Phil, now it is our slide. My name is there now too." Dan said triumphantly, glancing at the names.

Phil looked at the shorter boy, then to the names, and then back to him. "Fine Dan. We can share the slide. But no one else is allowed here!" Phil warned.

"Agreed. I will defend the castle!" Dan said loudly, his lips forming a wide grin as he punched his small and clenched fist into the air.

"Knights Dan and Phil, will defend the fortress!" Phil yelled as he got into a fighting stance with his invisible sword, his eyes bright and happy.
