I was so excited about going to the party with Lucas that night that I had spent all morning digging through my closet to find something to wear. I decided to take his advice and wear something darker, not wanting to stick out anymore than I already would.

After several hours of digging and trying things on, I finally settled on a pair of dark blue jeans, my wonderful new pink converse, and a black “I heart NY” t-shirt mother had got me on her last trip to New York. I’d never worn it before, since it was black, and was a little excited to finally get to wear it.

I laid my outfit out on my bed, all ready for me to change into later, not wanting to get it dirty before tonight. After taking one last look at the outfit, I smiled and headed downstairs. It was oddly quiet in the house so I walked around for awhile, searching for my parents.

After a few minutes, I found a note stuck on the refrigerator from my mom. It said that she had to run back to the office for a few hours. Surprise surprise. So that’s where mother was, but where was dad hiding?

Walking down the hall, I heard the shuffling of papers coming from dad’s office and took a peek inside. Sure enough, he was sitting at his desk with his reading glasses on, looking through some papers.

I lightly knocked on the door then stepped inside. He smiled up at me as I sat down in one of his comfy arm chairs.

“How are you today sweety?” he asked as he looked back down to his papers.

“Fine,” I answered, craning my neck to see what he was working on. “What’s that?”

He stopped for a second, smiling up at me. “You know I can’t share that with you; client attorney privilege.”

I shrugged. “I wasn’t asking who it was or anything, just wondering what it’s about.” Normally I didn’t really care what he worked on, but there were a lot of papers all over his desk, and I mean a lot. There were so many papers that I couldn’t even see his desk! So it made me a little curious what could need so many official papers.

He looked down at the papers then back up at me. “Well, it’s not like it’s a murder case or anything, I’m just looking over some papers to make sure everything is in order for when this boy turns 18 tomorrow.

“His father passed away and left him quite a bit of money and some property to be given to him on his 18th birthday. I worked with his father so the firm thought I should supervise the transactions, just make sure all the paperwork is in order and everything is set up right.”

“Huh,” I sat sideways in the chair, hanging my legs over the arm rest. “How much money are we talking here?”

Father grinned as he looked down at the paperwork. “Let’s just say he’ll be the richest 18 year old, maybe even richest person, for miles.”

My legs fell off the armrest as my jaw dropped. “Holy crap, that much money!? How did his dad have that much money to give?”

He shrugged. “Well, he didn’t live like we do; he lived in a small house and didn’t buy extravagant things. Plus, his parents passed away while his boy was still young, and they left their fortune to him. So I imagine the father has had his parents money stashed away, gaining interest, then just passed it all on to the boy, along with a good amount of his own money.”

Father started pushing the papers into piles. “It’s amazing the kind of money you accumulate when you only spend a small portion of what you make.”

“No kidding,” I said, leaning back in the chair. I wonder what lucky guy gets to have all that money. Wonder what he’ll do with it all. Man, if I had that kind of money, I’d probably blow it all on clothes, shoes, an awesome phone, a new car, oooooo a huge house with a pool, a-
