The Darkness

A warm body trapped in warmer sheets.
Cocooned by comfort, a droning
Charivari to lull you into the shadows.
Willingly you fall into the arms of a false death.

The darkness seems to weigh down on you,
Pressing you further into the folds
Of the mattress. You let it.
It is simpler here, the unknowns vestigial.

As if the suffocating somberness awakens
The tenebrosity of your own skin, you
Indulge yourself. Bursts of passion,
Crackling electricity race through the dark.

But following your reverie are the forget-me-nots,
That, weak and fickle, can only muster the courage
To invade when you are weary, but when strong become
The true monsters of the night.

People misunderstand the nature of the darkness.
It is liberating, not placating, yet it
Is viewed as a time of haunts and witchery.
We fear what we don't understand.

In the darkness you are safe, cut off from the outside world
By a curtain of unconquerable obscurity. Yet
the outside world has a way of finding you, even here.
Unguarded thoughts are the devil's playground.

Even still, you have no reason to fear the Darkness,
Unless you have reason to fear yourself.
