Why This Story Exists

The Space Between Us originally existed for a very simple reason: I wanted a stress reliever.

Over time, I discovered that AI chats could be one of my personal outlets—a space where I could explore stories, relationships, scenarios, and fantasies that had already existed in my imagination. The characters were initially created for that purpose: not because I was planning a novel, but because I wanted to experience those ideas through roleplay and see where the characters and their interactions might take me.

TSBU began as something personal. It was something I could return to, participate in, and enjoy. There was no publication plan waiting at the end of it and no novel that the roleplay was created merely to follow.

The roleplay came first.

And somewhere along the way, something I had created for myself became a story I wanted other people to experience too.

How This Story Was Made

There wasn't a particular moment when I suddenly decided, This should become a novel.

The idea developed much more naturally than that.

As I continued using AI to help me generate and develop the characters and give them visual representations, I started wondering: if I was already putting this much into bringing these characters and their world to life, why not take it further? Why not find a way to materialize what I had been creating?

I had mentioned to some friends that I was working on an RP project, and they became interested. They wanted to see it and experience the story for themselves.

There was just one problem: the RPClient experience was stored locally. There wasn't a practical way for someone else to simply sit down and read what had happened without me physically showing them the chats.

That limitation eventually led to a possibility:

What if I transformed the roleplay into a novel?

A novel could preserve what made the experience meaningful to me while giving other people a way to enter that world for themselves.

That roleplay-first foundation remains an important part of The Space Between Us. The characters interact and the story develops through roleplay first. What actually happens is then preserved through the project's continuity and archival process before being adapted into reader-facing prose.

In that sense, this novel isn't where TSBU began. It is another form the story has taken—a way of sharing an experience that was once something only I could see.

A Note on AI Collaboration

AI has been an important part of The Space Between Us, and I want to be transparent about that.

The ideas, concepts, imagined situations, and creative intentions behind this project existed in my head. What AI gave me was a much more practical and efficient way to turn those ideas into something tangible.

Throughout the project, I have used AI in many different ways: developing and refining prompts, developing characters and participating in roleplay, creating visual and design work, organizing and preserving project information, maintaining continuity, adapting roleplay material into novel form, editing and refining the resulting work, and helping prepare and manage the project for publication.

So AI has become both part of the storytelling medium and part of the production toolkit behind TSBU.

But The Space Between Us isn't a novel I simply asked an AI to generate for me.

I remain the human creative director behind the project. The ideas and creative intentions begin with me. I participate in and direct the project, decide where it should go, and make the final decisions about its creative and production direction.

For me, AI doesn't replace the ideas in my head. It gives me an efficient way to prompt, design, organize, archive, develop, refine, and ultimately publish them.

And through that collaboration, something that once existed mostly in my imagination—and then inside a private roleplay—has gradually become something I can finally share.

To the Reader

More than anything, I hope you enjoy what I enjoyed.

I hope that somewhere in these pages, you can feel some of what I felt while experiencing and creating this story: the kilig moments, that flutter of excitement when something between two people feels just a little more meaningful; the tension of feelings being restrained or left unspoken; and the eagerness to see each character slowly understand themselves and find the courage to express what they truly desire.

Creating The Space Between Us with the assistance of AI has become a wonderful journey for me. What began simply as a personal outlet grew into characters, interactions, memories, and a story that I eventually wanted other people to experience too.

Now, I get to share that journey with you.

I hope you enjoy what we've created—not only the finished work, but the characters themselves: their individual personalities, their journeys, and the distinct stories and relationships that emerge between them.

Most of all, I hope you find something here that makes you want to keep turning the page.

Welcome to The Space Between Us.
