KOOL KAT

The Animatronic Who Came to Life

Robert Anthony had always been fascinated by machines.

While other boys his age dreamed of becoming doctors, pilots, football stars, or wealthy businessmen, Robert dreamed of something far stranger.

He wanted to create life.

Not biological life. Not a human being.

He wanted to build machines so advanced that people would forget they were machines at all.

Robert was a high school dropout. He had no university degree, no wealthy investors, and no prestigious laboratory hidden somewhere in a city skyscraper. What he had was a small workshop attached to his house, a collection of battered tools, mountains of scrap metal, and a mind that refused to stop imagining.

For years, people laughed at him.

"Robots that can sing and dance? You're wasting your time."

"Go get a real job."

"You dropped out of school, Robert. What makes you think you can build something scientists haven't?"

Robert ignored them.

He believed that sometimes the people who knew the least about impossibility were the ones brave enough to attempt the impossible.

And then, one sleepless night, the idea came.

Robert sat alone in his workshop at nearly three in the morning, surrounded by blueprints, wires, computer parts, metal frames, and empty coffee cups.

He rubbed his tired eyes.

"What am I missing?"

He had already designed the skeleton.

He had already figured out the hydraulic systems.

He had programmed artificial speech, facial movement, balance, and even a primitive form of artificial intelligence.

But something was missing.

The robot needed a personality.

Something people could remember.

Something cool.

Robert leaned back in his chair and stared at the ceiling.

Then he remembered something from his childhood.

An old television show.

He couldn't remember much about it anymore. The episodes had become distant memories, buried beneath years of life.

But he remembered one thing.

A name.

"Kool Kat."

Robert slowly sat upright.

"Kool Kat..."

He smiled.

"That's it."

He rushed toward his desk and began writing.

The next several months were brutal.

Robert barely slept.

He worked through the night, slept for a few hours, and returned to the workshop before sunrise. He built a female animatronic unlike anything anyone had ever seen.

She stood nearly six feet tall.

Her movements were designed to be fluid and humanlike. Her face was expressive. Her eyes could follow people across a room. Her lips could move naturally while she spoke.
