P.S. Here's a little sneak peek 👀🤭
The docks were no place for children. Littered with rusty fish hooks and against unruly waters that would drown you for so much as looking too deep into them. But it seemed everyone in the village agreed, I was no ordinary child. So I ran down the pier past overflowing nets and sailors, bare feet padding against the wooden boardwalk.
I was seeking out one of the old fishermen. Withered down enough that they didn't have the fight left to deny a starving child food. But instead of the usual miserly old men trading stories with anyone who would listen, there was a hush fallen over the whole pier. A heavy, suffocating silence.
At the center of this silence was a mountain of a man. He had long hair and a beard matching in length. Fiery red in color. His hands were the size of dinner plates, and his biceps strained against the sleeves of his shirt. He hulked over the men of the dock. His clothes were simple but deceiving. I knew they were more expensive than anyone around those parts could afford. And when he looked at me, his eyes were a striking green I had only ever seen in the reflection of rain puddles and ponds. They were my eyes.
He had been whispering to the head foreman, a usually boisterous, assertive sort of man, who now stood with his head bent low, eyes downcast. As little welcome as I was in werewolf society, even I knew that was a sign of respect.
For a moment they spoke, and the foreman nodded decisively, looking up and pointing. Directly at me.
The man looked up. With long strides he ate up the distance between us. Besides us, humans and wolves alike made way, parting with heads bowed low.
It was undeniable. From the power radiating around him and the stirrings of my own newly awakened wolf deep inside me. He was an alpha.
"Girl." His voice was gravelly but not unpleasant. Stern but not unkind. I didn't answer. Just stared down at the dirty, ragged hem of my hand-me-down dress.
"Look at me." I did. I looked him straight in the eye. Arms crossed in a gesture halfway between defiance and defense. Some childlike courage woke up within me. I knew what it meant to survive. They could throw me out of schools and shops. They could hide their children from me and only spare their scraps and trash. I might have been dirty and poor, but those docks were mine. The grassy hills and the gulls and beach and sand and stench of fish were mine. Alpha or not, he wouldn't run me off them.
"I'm looking," I said. Under his beard, his lips twitched up, but the rest of his face remained undecipherable.
"What is your name, girl?" he asked.
"Ila," I said. I said it with my whole chest. It was a good name, grander than I was.
"Ila," he repeated the name as if it pained him. "And your mother is Aria Astrael." He said it like a statement, more resigned than anything else. I nodded.
With a grunt, he bent down, kneeling to my level. He had the expression of a man who was seldom ill at ease being forced to face it for the first time. There was a heaviness about him, and when he lifted his hand onto my shoulder, he imparted some of that heaviness onto me.
"Ila... one day, you will be Luna."
And I believed him.
