"Some cities welcome you with open arms. Berlin welcomed me with a storm."
The first thing I noticed wasn't the rain.
It was the silence.
Not the peaceful kind.
The kind that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
The train screeched to a stop beneath the grey Berlin sky, and for a brief moment, nobody moved. Raindrops slid down the windows like tiny rivers, blurring the city into streaks of black, silver, and pale yellow lights.
I tightened my grip around the handle of my suitcase.
This was it.
A new city.
A new apartment.
A new university.
A new life.
Or at least...
that's what I kept telling myself.
"Denisa?"
Rumy nudged my shoulder before standing up.
"We're here."
"I know."
"You don't sound excited."
"I never do."
She rolled her bright ocean-blue eyes.
"You seriously need therapy."
"I seriously need coffee."
"Same thing."
Despite myself, a small smile escaped my lips.
That was Rumy.
No matter how dark a room felt, she'd somehow find a way to let a little light in.
She stepped onto the platform first, instantly groaning as cold rain soaked the sleeves of her oversized black hoodie.
"Oh, you've got to be kidding me!"
I laughed quietly.
Berlin wasn't exactly welcoming us with sunshine.
People hurried past carrying umbrellas, headphones in, eyes fixed ahead. Nobody smiled. Nobody spoke louder than they had to.
Everyone looked like they had somewhere more important to be.
The city felt... alive.
Not in a comforting way.
More like it was watching.
"You coming?" Rumy called.
I blinked.
For a second, I could've sworn someone had been staring at me from the opposite platform.
A tall figure dressed entirely in black.
But when another train rushed past...
he was gone.
...
Our apartment was on the fourth floor of an old brick building tucked between a bookstore and a tiny café that smelled like cinnamon.
Inside, it wasn't much.
White walls.
Dark wooden floors.
Two bedrooms.
A small kitchen.
A balcony overlooking narrow streets lined with trees.
