Everything started just like any other ordinary day—or at least, the kind of day we pretended was ordinary.
I was lying awake in my bed, keeping quiet so I wouldn't wake Angel. It was the morning before the last day of school and I was excited to finally be free. There were a few tests to take but after that I wouldn't have to wear one of those heinous uniforms or cow to the grumpy adults they call teachers for the next three months.
The clock said it was five in the morning but I couldn't go back to sleep. As funny as it sounds I felt like I was being watched. You know that feeling when you know someone is looking at you even though you can't see them? It felt like that but more intense. Careful not to make noise, I lifted my head to check and make sure we were alone. Of course I saw no one- I never did.
Time crawled by but I remained awake. Our parents, Dana and Theo Ritz, were very influential in Greenwich and beyond- which was saying something as the community is well known for its affluent neighborhoods and community members, and this year they were sponsoring a summer gala to celebrate the summer and raise funds for the less fortunate. I had asked, hinted, begged and begged and now they were finally letting me do some of the planning and logistics and I couldn't be happier. It was a task that was arguably more valuable than any amount of schooling could be- to me at least.
At some point I heard the soft chime of our alarm clock and Angel, my twin sister stir behind me. Her timing as always was flawless, and unlike me her behavior was usually perfect. I pretended to be asleep and she gently shook me awake. Reluctantly, I got out of bed but instead of changing, I went to my desk.
"Come on we got to get ready for school. We can't afford to be late again." Angel told me. The bathroom door swung open and Angel came out in the standard uniform: a maroon blazer, tie white undershirt and a matching knee length khakis.
"I have something I need to finish up first," I told her. I could feel her silently urging me to get ready, though she didn't argue but I refused. I took a quick glance at Angel as she breezily made her way out to .
I put in some air pods with some lofi music playing and I set myself to choosing and filling out the invitations. It wasn't easy as we had a few really good options to choose from. In the end I decided on a rich lavender invitation with a shiny gold envelope.
With my best handwriting I filled out the addresses. It was painstaking work but It felt worth it. I was so engrossed I didn't even notice the sun crawl up the sky.
Our parents had sprung for the most expensive and exclusive education possible. I had wanted to be homeschooled but of course I was overruled. What they didn't understand and what I had tried to explain was that just because something cost more doesn't automatically make it better quality. The teachers were strict and always in an irritable mood which made me want to be anywhere else. As a result, I usually wasn't in a hurry to attend and didn't care if I were late- save for the lecture and detention I occasionally got.
Though I knew my time was short, I continued working.
Without looking up, I felt her eyes look me over and when she saw I wasn't going to go get dressed, she let out a slightly troubled sigh before she left the room.
