It was a sun-drenched spring morning. The church bells echoed throughout the neighborhood, marking the end of the Sunday service June never missed.
Bright, ambitious, and determined, June had endured many hardships throughout her childhood, making faith an essential pillar of her life.
She had recently turned twenty and looked toward the future with enthusiasm. Passionate about fashion, drawing, and cooking, she thrived in anything that allowed her creativity to flourish.
As usual, she stopped by her favorite bakery on the corner to buy what she called "the best brioche in the world" for her family's brunch.
As she stepped inside, the owner greeted her.
— Good morning, June. How are you today? You look radiant, as always. Is that one of your new creations?
— Hi, John. I'm doing very well. How about you? Oh, thank you so much, that really means a lot. And yes, it is one of my latest pieces. I spent days working on it, but it's finally finished.
She replied with satisfaction.
Her short black velvet dress, adorned with delicate gold embroidery and cinched at the waist with a belt, revealed a promising talent despite the limited resources at her disposal.
John nodded admiringly as he slipped the brioche into a paper bag.
— I've been telling you this for years, June... you're destined for great things.
She let out a small laugh, both touched and slightly embarrassed, before taking the bag from him.
— If that ever happens, you'll be able to tell everyone you knew me before I became famous!
— Oh, you can count on it. I certainly won't keep quiet about it.
June gave him one last smile before leaving the bakery and making her way home.
The sun warmed the pavement, and the air carried the peaceful softness so typical of Sunday mornings. Everything felt simple and familiar—the kind of gentle day one experiences without giving it much thought.
She had no idea that, before brunch was even over, her life would take a turn she could never have imagined.
