Is there such a thing as love at first sight? An intense passion for someone else that becomes an immediate union of life intertwined together? Or is this something that was monopolized during the evolution of Valentine's Day or the stories about a princess in the search for "true love"?
I feel like at one point in my life, I was a true believer in the theory that everyone has a soul mate. Like every other little girl, reading stories about a lonely maiden, hidden away in a tall and locked tower. She sits there, waiting for her knight in shining armor to climb the scales of the walls to rescue her where they immediately fall in love and then get married two days later.
That's such a crock of shit.
My life growing up was the furthest away from those stories. I had no examples of what actual love could look like, growing up with no male figure in my life, someone to call Dad. My mother started off a good mom, but then addiction took her from me. And she became the person I feared the most. I could rely on stories to explain how life was, how families and friends were supposed to be. Those same stories taught me about all different types of love. And when I thought I finally found my person, someone who loved and worshiped me, I thought this is it.
But then the floor collapsed beneath me. Having my heart broken made me realize that love, it was just a myth. A fairy tale.
Any experience I had in my life, he was my first. He was my first friend, first boyfriend, and first kiss. We shared everything together. The embarrassing moments, the ones that caused you to ugly cry, and most of all the joys. He was my hero in many ways but also became the villain in my story. I used to dream of us, living happily together as if it never happened. And then other nights I would shutter awake from the nightmare of one day that changed our lives completely.
How is it that you can love someone so much, and then also hate them with every ounce of your being?
So, at this moment as I find myself laying in the back of an ambulance and I open my eyes in search of what happened, I find his deep ocean blue eyes looking back into mine.
Which leads me to wonder... Am I dreaming or living my nightmare?
