Sarah Lee Lynn was born on January 29th 1973 to mother Jessica Lynn who died giving birth to her . At the tender age of 1 day old Sarah was processed into foster care . Growing up she didn't know much about her family other than her father left before she was born and her mother died while giving birth , she had no next of kin and always thought that's why she was placed in foster care. Sarah wasn't the type of kid who would cause trouble , she was quiet , observant and painfully intelligent in ways adults often overlooked. Year after year Sarah watched many children leave the system. Room after roo emptied . Names were called , bags were packed and promises of a "forever home" were made.
And Sarah stayed
Still hoping
Still waiting
In 1978 Sarah was called to the interview room by her teacher during school hours to meet a nurse who wanted to adopt a child
She expected the usual run down , a routine check , another worker asking the same questions and later a feedback saying she was either too big , too small or not looking for a girl.
Instead she met Evelyn Withmore.
Evelyn lived a quiet life in the city , no husband and no children . A life that was somewhat too quiet for her
At first it was supposed to be just a conversation . A formal meeting . Nothing permanent.
But something about Sarah stayed with her
Brown skin . Soft voice and big searching brown eyes that held more understanding than any six year old should have.
Evelyn knew , almost immediately, she had to take Sarah home with her .
After a long conversation with her family and weeks of paperworks and consideration , she made the decision
She would adopt her .
Sarah Lee Lynn became Sarah Lee Withmore
On December 20th 1979 the adoption was finalized.
It felt like Christmas had come early
For the first time in her life , Sarah had a home
A real one.
Evelyn's family welcomed her without hesitation . Christmases, birthdays, and Adoption day anniversary became celebrations filled with gifts , laughter and warmth Sarah had never experienced before.
And Sarah gave everything back in return
Good grades. Discipline. Respect . Achievements that made Evelyn proud to say "That's my daughter !!"
And for Sarah , there was no question about it
Evelyn wasn't just her adoptive mother
She was her mother !
