The main hall of the Chung estate was suffocatingly quiet, save for the rhythmic clinking of fine porcelain. At the head of the long mahogany dining table sat Grandmother Chung, her posture rigid, her eyes sharp as glass.
"Has the doctor called with the final update?" she demanded, not looking up as she poured her tea.
Kang Minho, her son and the current CEO of Chung Enterprises, cleared his throat, setting his fork down. "Not yet, Mother. Haejin is resting upstairs. The private medical team is keeping a constant watch. They said the second trimester is where the real risk begins."
"Risk or no risk, this pregnancy must be carried to full term," the old woman said coldly. She finally looked up, her gaze pinning Minho down. "For three generations, the Chung family has led the shipping empire of this country. But an empire is nothing without a male successor. Your cousins are already circling our assets like vultures because you've only managed to produce static investments, not a son."
Minho's grip tightened on his napkin. "I know, Mother. But the doctors... they spoke to me again this morning. Carrying triplets is putting an immense strain on Haejin's heart. They strongly recommended selective reduction. To protect her. To protect at least one viable-"
"Absolutely not!"
The sharp slam of a teacup against its saucer echoed through the room. Grandmother Chung's face contorted in disgust.
"Reduce them? Cut away our chances? Do those foolish doctors know the gender of the children in that womb? No! What if the one they eliminate is the boy we have been praying for? What if you allow them to kill the future heir of this family?"
"Minho, please..." A weak, trembling voice broke the heavy tension in the room.
Seo Haejin stood at the entrance of the dining hall, pale and leaning heavily against the doorframe. Her baby bump was prominently visible, but her face was gaunt, the dark circles under her eyes showing the heavy physical toll the pregnancy was taking on her.
Minho immediately stood up, rushing to her side to guide her to a chair. "Haejin, you should be in bed. Why did you come down?"
"I heard the shouting," Haejin whispered, her voice cracking as she looked at her husband, then at her mother-in-law. "Mother... please listen to the medical staff. My body feels so weak. The doctors said if we don't reduce the count, I might... I might not survive the delivery room."
Grandmother Chung didn't offer a single ounce of sympathy. Instead, she let out a bitter, mocking laugh.
"The women of the Chung family have always sacrificed for the lineage," the old woman said, her voice dripping with ice. "Are you saying your comfort is more important than the continuation of our bloodline, Haejin? You spent years failing to conceive. Now that the heavens have finally blessed this house, you want to throw away a potential son out of fear?"
Haejin looked at her husband, her eyes pleading, begging him to stand up for her. "Minho... please. Tell her. I'm scared."
Minho looked away, unable to meet his wife's desperate gaze. The pressure of the family name, the looming threat of his cousins taking over the company, and his own deeply rooted desire for a son weighed heavily on his shoulders.
"Haejin," Minho said softly, his voice devoid of the warmth a husband should possess. "Mother is right. We can't risk losing the boy. The medical team we hired is the best in South Korea. They will keep you stable. We just need to hold on for a few more months."
A tear slipped down Haejin's pale cheek. "And if things go wrong? If my life is the price?"
"You won't die," Minho replied quickly, though his voice lacked certainty. "But we need this heir. The company needs this heir. *I* need a son, Haejin. Please, understand."
Haejin felt a cold shiver run down her spine. Sitting at that luxurious table, surrounded by wealth and gold, she realized she wasn't viewed as a human being or a beloved wife. To the Chung family, she was merely an incubator for an heir.
"Look at you, crying over a blessing," Grandmother Chung scolded, waving her hand dismissively. "Go back to your room and rest. Eat what the nutritionists prepare. Every ounce of strength you have must go into keeping those children alive. Especially the boy."
"And if they are all girls?" Haejin asked, her voice suddenly dropping into a whisper, a hollow, terrifying question filling the room. "What if none of them are the son you want?"
The table went dead silent.
Grandmother Chung's eyes narrowed into slits. "Do not speak such misfortune into existence, Haejin. A son will be born. He *must* be born. The heavens wouldn't dare humiliate the Chung family with three useless daughters."
Haejin didn't say another word. She slowly stood up, refusing Minho's hand as he tried to help her, and walked back toward the staircase. Every step felt like she was walking toward her own execution.
Downstairs, Minho sat back down, his expression troubled but resolute.
"Don't let her emotional outbursts sway you, Minho," the grandmother reminded him, sipping her freshly poured tea. "A man must be firm. When that boy is born, everything-the sleepless nights, the health scares, the expenses-will all be worth it. He will be the golden child of the Chung family."
Minho nodded slowly, staring into his plate. "Yes, Mother. A son. Everything for the heir."
High above the dining hall, tucked away in the shadows of the master bedroom, Haejin placed her trembling hands over her swollen stomach. The babies kicked inside her, vibrant and full of life, completely unaware of the heavy, suffocating expectations already placed upon their tiny shoulders.
She wept silently, praying to a universe that seemed entirely indifferent to her pain. She prayed for survival, but more than anything, she prayed that the child the family so desperately demanded would be there when the curtain finally fell.
Because she knew, with absolute certainty, that if a boy did not open his eyes in that delivery room, the wrath of the Chung family would be merciless.
