"Hello there, my name is, Kazuri Akiyama."
I'm 19 years old, i'm a student at college, a second year, well a sophomore now.
I don't really like my life. I have this one-of-a annoying roommate, I don't even know how we becamed roommates in the first place.
Ever since high school, we started fighting.
We used to be childhood friends, until I moved away. Now we've been fighting,
and arguing everyday.
Sigh... Why can't we just live a normal life?...
Suddenly my roommate closed the door behind him, and
immediately regretted it. There he was again. Kazuri, pacing around like the world owed
him an apology.
Thirty seconds in the room and he's already complaining, my roomate thought.
Some things never change.
He tossed his bag on the bed and sighed.
"Yo," he said. "You gonna keep talking to yourself or you gonna acknowledge i exist?"
Ugh.. That's my roommate, Shin Kurosawa..
I dropped onto my bed, and stared at the ceiling.
I swear, he lives to annoy me.
"And you live to ignore me." Shin shot back,
like he could read my mind. Which he probably
could..?
We've known each other since we were 10.
Some childhood friends we turned out to be
"Yeah, well some childhood friends actually act
like friends," I muttered out loud this time.
Shin's raised an eyebrow
"And some childhood
friends stop running away to another city for
5 years without saying goodbye," he said.
I sat up annoyed.
"That wasn't my fault! My dad got transferred."
"Right, right. Not your fault. Never your fault."
He flopped onto his own bed, and stared at
the ceiling too.
For a second, neither of us said anything.
The room was quiet, but it wasn't the comfortable
kind of quiet. It was the kind where you remember why you to someone in the
first place.
Then shin sighed.
"Look, Kazuri. We're stuck together for the next 2 years. Can we at least try not to kill each other before finals?"
I rolled my eyes.
"No promises,"
I said, and flopped back down.
Shin groaned.
"Great. Two more years of this crap"
I closed my eyes for a second, trying to ignore him. It didn't work.
The room was too small, and
his presence was too loud. Even when he wasn't talking,
I could feel him glaring at the
ceiling like it personally offended him.
After a minute, he sat up, and started digging
through his bag.
"Did you steal my ramen again?"
"What? No!" I shot back, sitting up too fast.
"I haven't been in here for an hour."
"Then where's the spicy one?" He held up the
empty wrapper like it was evidence in a trial.
"I bought that yesterday."
I frowned.
"Maybe you ate it in your sleep. You do weird stuff when you sleep, remember?"
Shin paused, then threw a pillow at my head.
"Shut up. That was one time in middle school."
I ducked, laughing despite myself.
"One time too many, Kurosawa."
He groaned, and fell back onto his bed.
"I hate you."
"Yeah, yeah. Hate me while you eat the non-spicy ramen in your drawer. I saw it earlier."
For a second, he just stared at me. Then he
sighed, long and dramatic.
"You're impossible, Kazuri."
"And you're predictable Shin."
The argument faded out into something that fell
almost... Normal. Annoying, but normal.
I guess that's better than silence.
I lay there for a while, listening to Shin shuffle
around. He was probably pretending to sleep.
We were both bad at that - pretending nothing had changed.
Eventually, my phone buzzed on the nightstand.
A message from Mom: How's the first day back? Be nice to Shin.
I snorted. That's rich.
"Your mom texting you again?" Shin said without opening his eyes.
"Don't tell her I'm alive. I don't need another lecture about sharing and getting along."
"She already knows you're alive. She asked me to be nice to you."
He sat up, glaring.
"And you told her?"
"No," I said, grinning.
"I told her you were dead."
Shin threw the pillow again.
This time it hit.
"I hate it here."
"You literally chose this dorm,"
I reminded him.
"I chose the dorm. I didn't choose you."
I sat up and stretched, the argument already fading into background noise.
"Yeah, well, housing ran out. We're stuck with
each other."
He sighed, long and tired,
and ran a hand through his hair.
"Fine. But if you touch my ramen again, I'm reporting you to the RA."
"Deal," I said.
"And if you leave your dirty socks on my side of the room, I'm throwing them out the. window."
"Fair."
For a few seconds, it was quiet again. Not tense this time. Just... normal.
Shin broke it first.
"So. Classes start tomorrow. You ready to. embarrass yourself in Lit again?"
I groaned.
"Don't remind me."
"Thought so."
