The silence in their penthouse feels deafening.

Two days have passed since their first serious argument after months of living so comfortably together. The incident occurred because Leo arrived late to the office once again. To his defense, he had been up until three in the morning, working on a major campaign proposal and other tasks, as he is more productive at night. However, when he attempted to explain his actions, the conversation quickly spiraled out of control.

What should have been a simple conversation, perhaps even an apology, had quickly escalated into something much more intense.

Leo recalled the escalating tension that night, word by word, until neither of them sounded like their usual selves.

Initially, Kai was simply curious about his own work, the projects, and his sleep habits. He was gently encouraging Leo to take better care of himself, hoping he wouldn't keep showing up to the office tired and late. But Leo, already worn out and annoyed from work, misunderstood Kai's concern as criticism and reacted defensively.

"What now?!" Leo shouted, his laugh devoid of any humor. "Did you also plan my entire evening? Should I start texting you every hour to keep you in the loop?"

Kai's expression softened slightly. "Sweetheart, that's not what I meant."

"Oh, please," he retorted, running a hand through his hair with exasperation. "That's exactly what you were getting at." His frustration was palpable, growing with each word. "You've been breathing down my neck about everything recently."

Kai stood across the room, jaw set tightly, with his hand on his waist. "Babe, I'm only trying to help you become more responsible."

Leo stood up from the chair, eyeing Kai with a sarcastic grin. "Oh, sure, darling, your 'help' is just what I needed."

The silence between them crackled with an unbearable tension, threatening to erupt at any moment.

"Some of us aren't robots," he snapped. "We can't all thrive on schedules that devour our lives, sleep three hours, and wake up looking flawless and punctual every day, like you."

Kai remained silent, but Leo was too overwhelmed with emotion to notice the change.

"For the record," he added sharply, "those nights I stayed late were due to work commitments, not gaming." His voice rose slightly. "Is this a newfound sense of superiority over my tardiness?"

"I'm sorry if you felt that way," Kai said, his voice devoid of any emotion. Without another word, he turned and walked away, leaving Leo alone as he retreated to their bedroom.

Every word Leo uttered seemed to pierce through Kai's defenses, leaving wounds deeper than he had ever intended. Instead of retaliating with a raised voice, Kai withdrew into himself, his expression becoming cold and distant.

The warmth that once radiated from him disappeared almost instantly, replaced by a familiar chill that Leo hadn't seen directed at him in months, leaving a painful emptiness in the air. It hurt more than if Kai had yelled.

Sitting alone on the couch, he dragged a hand down his face and muttered, "I truly messed up this time."

When he was lost in his thoughts, the sound of the study room door opening jolted him back to reality.
