The sun stood high above the old tiled house, warming its wide courtyard and red floors. Inside, the weekend had turned lively.
In the backyard, large vessels were placed over firewood stoves. The smell of biriyani masala filled the air. Some were chopping onions and tomatoes at lightning speed. A few kids sat in front of the TV, crying dramatically because of the onions — yet stubbornly refusing to move away.

The younger men were busy washing chicken near the water tap, sleeves folded. In the kitchen, the girls experimented with a new snack recipe they had seen online. The older women took charge of the biriyani, tasting, adjusting salt, and giving instructions without even looking up.

This house wasn’t just a building.
It was built years ago by two brothers who had saved every rupee they earned through their lives — determined to create one large home where the family would never be separated.

The elder brother, Gurunathan, married Janaki Ammal. They had one son and one daughter:

1.Vishwanathan, married to Kavya
A. Dhinakaran- 23
B. Diwakaran- 21

2.Vanitha, married to Santhosh
A. Narmada- 19
B. Naveen- 18
C. Nila- 16

The younger brother, Paneer Selvam, married Shanti. They had one daughter and two sons:

3.Kalaiselvi, married to Anbarasan
A. Vaishnavi- 18
B. Varshini- 17
C. Vishnu-13

4.Devarasu, married to Venmathi
A. Tamizhselvan- 19
B. Thaenmozhi -17

5.Sekar, married to Manimegalai
A. Anandh- 15
B. Anitha -11

Now both brothers were in their seventies. Their wives stood beside them just like they always had — not just as partners, but as pillars who shaped the warmth of the house.

Their children, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, and grandchildren filled every corner with noise. Laughter echoed through the halls. Arguments over salt and spice felt normal. Someone was always calling someone else.
They had all gathered this weekend not just for biriyani — but to visit their family temple, following a custom that had been carried down for generations.

As Gurunathan and Paneer Selvam sat on the veranda watching the chaos, a quiet satisfaction rested on their faces.

They had built a house.
But what stood around them now was something greater — a family that still chose to come back.

Dhina: “So… you decided distance was easier.”
It wasn’t anger. Just acceptance.
She didn’t deny it.
Narmada: “I didn’t want problems… for either of us.”
Silence settled between them again — thicker this time.
After a moment, he let out a small breath and smiled faintly.
Dhina: “I thought maybe… I imagined everything.”
She met his eyes.
Narmada: “You didn’t imagine anything. Let’s just focus on our careers first.”
Dhina: “And then?”
She stayed silent.
After a long moment, he exhaled.
Dhina: “Fine… Will you marry me after that?”
The world seemed to stop.
Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.
Dhina (softly): “Hm? Tell me.”
Narmada: “I… I have to go. Someone might come.”
He held her wrist — not tightly, just enough to stop her.
Dhina: “Answer me and I’ll leave.”

.............................

Thaen: “What, mama? Whistling?”
He looks shocked at her sudden appearance.
Naveen scratched his neck.
Naveen: “Haan… just.”

He drags his words.
Thaen: “Just?”
Naveen: “Just.”

She tilted her head teasingly.
Thaen: “Here I thought it was for me.”
He widened his eyes, smiling but saying nothing.

.............

Vaishu: “I always text first.”
“I wait for replies.”
“You just say you’re sleepy, tired, or already sleeping.”
She hesitated before sending the next message.
Vaishu: “I feel like I want to talk to you more than you want to talk to me. It’s like only I keep wanting to spend time with you.”
The message sent.
Silence followed.
