Chapter 1: The Scroll That Should Never Be Opened

Night settled over Konoha like a watchful shadow, wrapping the village in quiet familiarity. Lanterns glowed softly along the streets, their light reflecting off tiled rooftops and wooden storefronts. Somewhere in the distance, laughter echoed from a bar while shinobi patrols moved with practiced ease, their footsteps silent against the cobblestone paths.

Far above it all, Naruto Uzumaki ran. He bounded across rooftops with reckless speed, the large scroll strapped to his back bouncing with every jump. His blond hair whipped behind him, blue eyes bright with equal parts exhilaration and panic. The adrenaline coursing through his veins made everything feel sharper, more alive. His breath came in ragged gasps, but he couldn't stop the laugh that bubbled up from his chest despite his burning lungs. He'd actually done it.

He skidded to a stop at the village's edge, his sandals scraping against weathered tiles, and leapt into the forest beyond. Branches snapped under his feet as he pushed deeper and deeper, weaving between ancient trees until Konoha's sounds faded away into nothing but rustling leaves and his own ragged breathing. The familiar comfort of the village gave way to the wild darkness of the forest, where shadows stretched long and thick between the trunks.

Only when he was certain no one had followed did Naruto collapse beside a fallen log, his back hitting the mossy bark with a thump. He tugged the massive scroll off his back and let it thud against the dirt, stirring up a small cloud of dust. For a moment, he simply sat there, chest still heaving, staring at what he'd stolen.

The Scroll of Seals. The most forbidden collection of jutsu in the village.

His fingers trembled—not with fear, but excitement. The scroll seemed to pulse with an almost tangible energy, its red seal gleaming faintly in the moonlight filtering through the canopy above. This was real. He'd actually managed to steal it, just like Mizuki-sensei had told him to do. If he learned just one technique from it, he'd pass the graduation exam. He'd finally become a genin.

Earlier that evening replayed vividly in his mind, each moment crystallizing with painful clarity. Iruka's voice had been gentle, but firm, his eyes carrying that pitying look Naruto had come to hate. The words themselves had been simple enough, but they'd hit harder than any punch. Around him, his classmates had celebrated, laughing and cheering as they received their hitai-ate, tying them proudly around their foreheads. Sasuke hadn't even looked surprised, simply accepting his with that cool indifference. Sakura had barely noticed Naruto at all, too busy stealing glances at Sasuke.

He'd stormed off, shouting about how unfair it was, how the test was rigged, but deep down... it hurt. It hurt worse than he'd ever let anyone see.

That was when Mizuki found him.

The chunin had leaned casually against a tree near the training grounds, silver hair catching the light, his expression sympathetic in a way that made Naruto's defenses crumble. His voice came out soft, almost conspiratorial, as he spoke words that would change everything.

"You know, Naruto, there is another way."

Naruto's head had snapped up, tears still wet on his cheeks, hope flaring in his chest like a sudden flame. "Another way?! You're not messing with me, right?!"

Mizuki smiled, warm and encouraging, the expression reaching his eyes in a way that felt genuine. "Of course not. There's a test even Iruka doesn't talk about—a secret one for students with... special potential."

Naruto shook his head, snapping back to the present, the memory dissolving like smoke. "Heh... guess I really am special after all," he muttered, grinning as he unfastened the scroll with trembling fingers.
