The Draven Defence Group tower rose from the heart of the city like a monument to controlled violence.
Steel, glass, and dark stone climbed skyward—its presence unmistakable. Not loud. Not ostentatious. Absolute. This was not a building designed to impress. It was built to endure. To dominate.
Sebastien Draven stepped out of the car at precisely nine o'clock.
The revolving doors parted for him without hesitation.
Inside, the atmosphere shifted the instant he entered. Conversations softened. Footsteps slowed. Heads inclined—just enough to acknowledge him without crossing into submission.
Recognition rippled through the lobby.
Sebastien moved through it with practiced ease. His black suit was tailored to perfection, the long overcoat draped cleanly over his shoulders, his expression unreadable. He did not acknowledge the attention.
He didn't need to.
This building bore his name.
He passed through security without pause; his presence alone was clearance. The elevators were already waiting, steel doors sliding open in silent invitation.
The ride to the upper floors was smooth. Uninterrupted.
When the doors opened, the executive level greeted him in hushed precision. A woman at the reception desk looked up and immediately straightened.
"Mr. Draven," she said politely. "Your father is expecting you."
Sebastien nodded once and continued on.
The walk to Ashton Draven's office was quiet. Thick carpeting swallowed footsteps. Frosted glass walls concealed meetings that could destabilize governments if overheard.
Sebastien stopped outside the doors.
They opened before he knocked.
Ashton Draven stood by the window, backlit by the city beyond. Broad-shouldered. Imposing. His dark suit was immaculate, his posture relaxed in the way only men accustomed to absolute control ever achieved.
As Sebastien stepped inside and the door closed softly behind him, the faintest trace of his father's pheromones reached him.
Deep. Grounded
Aged smoky cedar and cold iron—solid, immovable, threaded with power. Not overwhelming. Never overwhelming. Ashton's presence did not demand submission.
It anchored.
Sebastien hadn't realized how tightly wound he was until his shoulders eased a fraction. A reflex older than conscious thought. The quiet assurance of standing within the orbit of the man who had shaped him.
"Close the door," Ashton said without turning.
Sebastien did.
They regarded each other in silence—a familiar exchange of unspoken expectation and mutual respect.
"You wanted to see me," Sebastien said.
Ashton turned, crimson eyes sharp and assessing. Not cold—never cold where Sebastien was concerned—but measured.
"I do," he replied. "There's a group making noise where they shouldn't."
Sebastien's expression didn't change. "Who?"
"The Serpents."
That earned a flicker of interest.
"They're new," Ashton continued. "Small. Ambitious. Reckless enough to test routes they don't control."
Sebastien exhaled softly through his nose. "Then shut them down."
Ashton studied him for a moment longer.
"No," he said calmly. "Meet them."
Sebastien's jaw tightened—barely.
"They want access," Ashton went on. "Supply. Permission. And whether they know it yet or not, they need us."
Sebastien folded his arms loosely. "And you think they're worth my time."
"I think they could be useful," Ashton replied. "In time."
Sebastien scoffed—internally. He knew better than to argue outright.
"They're thugs," he said coolly. "In expensive suits."
Ashton's mouth curved faintly. Not quite a smile.
"Then you should have no trouble handling them."
A pause.
"I want you to listen," Ashton added. "Secure an agreement if possible. Make them understand where they stand."
Sebastien inclined his head once. "When?"
"Tonight."
Sebastien turned toward the door. "I'll handle it."
As he left the office, the steady grounding of his father's presence faded, replaced by the sharpened edge of anticipation.
Ashton watched him go—pride and calculation coexisting easily in his gaze.
Sebastien Draven did not fail.
And tonight, he would remind a new player in the city exactly whose world they were stepping into.
The corridors outside hummed with restrained urgency as Sebastien returned to his own office. Assistants moved efficiently. Conversations lowered as he passed. Screens displayed figures that shifted markets and destabilized regions with a few keystrokes.
Sebastien finished the remainder of the day's work with ruthless efficiency.
Contracts reviewed. Routes approved. A shipment rerouted before it became a problem. A quiet directive issued—ensuring a rival's delay became permanent.
Controlled. Precise. Bloodless, for now.
Still, the Serpents lingered at the edge of his thoughts.
Sebastien disliked variables. He preferred leverage. Predictability. Clean outcomes.
A new group pushing into territory they didn't control meant one of two things—they didn't understand how the city worked, or they were arrogant enough to believe they could force it to bend.
Both were inconvenient.
As evening crept closer, Sebastien straightened his cuffs, slid his coat back over his shoulders, and left his office without ceremony. Tae-seung fell into step beside him immediately—already briefed, already alert.
"They've been careful," Tae said quietly as they walked. "Too careful for amateurs."
That only deepened Sebastien's irritation.
"Careful doesn't mean competent," Sebastien replied. "It means they're hiding something."
The elevator doors slid shut.
Sebastien adjusted his tie, jaw tightening almost imperceptibly as he reviewed the coming meeting—the theatrics, the posturing, the inevitable attempt to impress. He disliked the messiness of it sets already.
Too much ego. Too little discipline.
By the time they reached the garage, his expression had settled into something cold and immaculate. Whatever unease he felt was buried beneath preparation.
If things went smoothly, he would secure the agreement and leave.
If they didn't—
Sebastien slid into the waiting car, the door closing with a solid, final sound.
Then he would remind them why Draven permission was never optional.
