Beeping. I hear beeping. I flash open my eyelids only to be blinded by a sliver of sunlight coming through curtains. An arm is thrown across my face with lightning speed.

Light! What! I..

Beep... beep... beep...

Why can I hear beeping? There should be no beeping. No light. I'm dead. I failed. L killed me. I should be in eternal darkness! In silence!

"Light, turn your alarm off already!"

Mum? I. I thought I was alone. Wait... alarm? Oh King of the Shinigami's... is this real?

I peer over at the alarm I haven't seen in millennia. How do I turn it off again? I let my finger trail over the now unfamiliar buttons until I find it. The beeping stops immediately and I breathe a short sigh of relief to be free of the noise. Very slowly, I remove my arm so that I can acclimatise to the light after all these years.

But, if I have somehow come back to life, then when have I come back to? I take a better look at the clock and groan. Of course, it would be November 26th wouldn't it? November 26th 2003. 2003. I shoot up into a sitting position and inspect my body regardless of the headache the light is giving me.

It's true. I'm seventeen again and if everything goes the same way as before then tomorrow is the day the Death Note will once again fall from the sky. Oh fuck, I'm seventeen. My nineteen year old brain has all the memories of the next two years. This sucks.

I need a plan. How did I act before I got the Death Note? Oh. Yeah. I was a perfectionist even before I became Kira. Well, at least I should be able to pull that off. Was there anything else I used to do? Sayu. I used to help her with homework. Okay. That shouldn't be a problem either. I didn't have any groups or clubs so I don't need to worry about that. Actually, I didn't really have any friends either. I was to concentrated on this like cram school. Oh. I have to do that again. Shit that's boring.

Death God, I had a sad life. L was probably the best thing that ever happened to me, even if we did both end up killing each other... Oh well, no one's dead yet. I think.

"Light, breakfasts on the table, where are you?"

Huh? Oh shit. Hm, I probably should stop swearing in front of people.

"I'll be right down!" I call back, already walking towards where I know my school uniform is.

It takes barely two minutes to change and perfect the old thing. I go to the mirror and settle my hair in position. I end up staring at my reflection. It's odd looking so young again, not quite fully grown and no flash of red in my eyes.

"Light!"

I whip my head round at the sound and automatically right my hair again. Turning back to the mirror I school my face into what I remember using. Calm, polite, mature. Finally, I head down the stairs in a confident step I never forgot how to use.

The colours here are to bright for me at the moment and there is a little shock at actually seeing mum and Sayu before me, but I just give my mum a small apologetic smile and sit down.

"I'm sorry for keeping you waiting, I just had a bad night's sleep." I relax slightly when they both do the same.

I turn towards my food. Food. I don't remember the last time food was a necessary part of my being. The simple miso soup and rice overwhelms my senses and I notice myself salivating as though I haven't eaten in years. Which I suppose I haven't all things considered. I swallow before I can start drooling and dig in with slightly more ferocity than my old self would have, but not enough for my eagerness to be noticed.

If it wouldn't be abnormal I would love to moan at the glorious taste of the soup. Even the rice has more flavour to it than I would have expected. I allow myself to blink slowly in pleasure. Then my chopsticks hit crockery and I stare into the bowl with deep disappointment. My breakfast has gone already. I pull myself back together and take the implements into the kitchen calmly.
