When I wake up, the first thing I see is him. Kayden's asleep, mouth slightly parted, one arm tossed over my waist like he's afraid I'll disappear. His hair's a mess, flat on one side, spiking in every wrong direction on the other. He looks peaceful. Unfairly peaceful.

I don't move. I just stare. My fingers hover in the air, tracing lazy shapes around his face like I'm sculpting him out of air — his jawline, his lashes, the soft curve of his lips. He's so close I can feel the heat of his breath on my chin.

"How long do I have to keep pretending I'm asleep?" he mumbles suddenly.

I jerk back like I've been caught doing something illegal. "You were awake?"

He opens one eye and grins, voice rough from sleep. "For a while. You were staring at me like a creep."

I groan and bury my face in the pillow. "No, kill me now."

He laughs, pulling me back into him. "You're too cute when you're flustered."

"Shut up," I mumble, but I can't stop smiling. It feels easy — dangerously easy — to fall into this rhythm with him.

We roll around on the bed for a while, just kissing and teasing, his fingers running through my hair, his breath brushing my ear. The sun is barely up, pale light bleeding through the curtains. Everything feels soft, lazy, effortless.

He kisses my neck again, warm lips dragging across my skin. "You're kinda insatiable, you know that?"

"Says the guy who started this," I shoot back.

He laughs, low and boyish, and then the phone rings.

I groan. "Ignore it."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah," I whisper, pulling him closer.

He smirks. "You're gonna regret that when I'm done with you."

I don't care. I want him to do every vile thing he's thinking of. I want him to touch me everywhere, kiss me everywhere till my whole body is dominated by him.

His mouth goes back to my stomach, his hands go everywhere — teasing, exploring, until I'm breathless again. The phone rings again.

He groans into my skin. "Seriously?"

"It'll stop," I say, not wanting to break apart.

It doesn't.

"Ugh," he mutters, grabbing the phone from the nightstand. "Let me just—"

He stops mid-sentence. I see the name flash on the screen, and my stomach drops. José.

He looks up at me, frozen. I bite my lip so hard it almost bleeds.

"Just answer it," I say, pretending my voice doesn't sound like sandpaper.

Kayden's brow furrows. "I — are you sure?"
