Then she turned.
Her expression was unreadable, but her eyes were sharp. "Did you hear?"
Hawks tilted his head. "Hear what?"
"They finally gave me my label."
He blinked. "Label?"
She wiped her jaw with the back of her glove, smearing sweat and dried blood. "Nomu."
Hawks froze.
"Like... that thing from USJ?"
Remi nodded, her voice flat. "Yeah. The big fucking monster."
The silence stretched between them, thick and heavy.
Hawks stepped forward, feathers twitching slightly. "That's not- Remi, that's not what you are."
She snorted, turning away. "Tell that to the Commission. It's official now. I'm not a student. I'm not a trainee. I'm a classified asset with a containment clause."
Hawks frowned, his voice quieter now. "They actually used the word 'containment'?"
"They used a lot of words," she said, pacing slowly. "Prototype. Engineered. Dangerous. But Nomu stuck."
She stopped in front of the mirror, staring at her reflection braids heavy down her back, golden veins pulsing faintly beneath her skin
Hawks stayed quiet, watching her from the edge of the training room, wings tucked tight, posture deceptively relaxed.
Remi turned, arms crossed, her voice low. "You ever want to pull a Nagant?"
That made him flinch.
Just slightly.
But she saw it.
The woman before him. Lady Nagant. she had snapped. she turned. she walked away from everything and aimed her rifle at the system that raised her.
Hawks' jaw tightened. "That's not something you say lightly."
"I'm not talking about going villain," Remi said, stepping closer. "I mean rogue. Off-grid. Doing things our own way. No Commission leash. No scripted heroism. Just... real choices."
Hawks didn't answer right away.
His eyes flicked to the mirror, to the girl standing there with blood on her knuckles and fire in her veins.
"You think that's freedom?" he asked.
"I think it's pretty close"
Her voice was steady, but something in it cracked just slightly. Hawks caught it. The way her shoulders didn't quite relax. The way her fingers twitched like they were still bracing for impact.
He didn't push. Just stepped forward, his boots soft against the padded floor, wings tucked tight behind him.
"Alright," he said, voice low. "Then think about it. Really think."
Remi blinked, surprised by the lack of lecture.
Hawks gestured toward the door with a tilt of his head. "Go to bed. Get some rest. You're half-dead and still trying to punch holes in concrete."
She didn't move.
He gave her a look "I'll clean up the mess in here. You go figure out what kind of rogue you want to be."
Remi hesitated, then nodded slowly. Her braids swayed as she turned, golden veins still pulsing faintly beneath her skin.
At the door, she paused. "You ever think about it?" she asked. "Walking away?"
