Chapter 9: Returning By Death

YN's eyes bounced across the room, going from between Rem, to Subaru, to himself, and back again, desperately, and without answer, trying to figure out why he was in the Guest Room he and Subaru had originally woke back up in on their first day in the Roswaal Mansion.

Rem: Guest-sama?

Addressing him as such again, YN, with a confused expression upon his face, locked eyes with Rem, who appeared to be equally confused as to why his vision was darting around as rapidly around the room as it was.

Silent for a moment more, YN stuttered out a weak response, unsure of what he really should say.

YN: ...I-Is this some kind of prank?

Only getting the maid to slowly tilt her head in further cluelessness, it genuinely appeared as if she hadn't any idea what YN was getting after.

In desperation, YN leaned in closer, and although the maid did not recoil to him doing so, he whispered out simply her name, as if pleading for some kind of explanation to the strangeness that this situation was.

YN: R-Rem...

Rem: — — —

Silent to his plea, Rem herself slightly leaned in closer, yet, as she did, a shadow seemed to be cast over her face.

YN: W-What's—?

Rem: —How is it that Guest-sama knows of Rem's name?

Cutting him off, the aura Rem gave off at this very moment felt almost hostile. Coupled with how her tone became much more serious, her lower voice had an undeniable confrontational aspect to it.

YN: —?!

Surprised to hear such a voice originate from Rem in this way, YN couldn't help but swallow a lump of apprehension in his throat, and leaned backward and away from the intimidating maid.

Trying to see around her, to the other side of the room, YN tried to at least get some kind of answer to the situation he found himself in.

YN: H-Hey, where's Subaru at? If this is... He should be—

Craning his neck back and forth, from side to side, YN finally got a view from around Rem.

This has gotta be a prank of some kind, right? There's no way it isn't. But why? Why does this accomplish? If it really is, then to be authentic, Subaru ought to be back in the main bed like he was before, right on the other side of the—

With a clear picture of Subaru finally located, he was right where he should be, yet, at the same time, YN couldn't believe what his eyes were showing him.

YN: —?!

Just as before, Ram was over at Subaru's bedside where he was already awake. Except, that instead of him being his usual enthusiastic self, Subaru wore an equally distressed face as YN's.

No...

—It was more distressed.

No.

YN was trying to understand what Subaru was looking at, but deep down, he already knew.

—Did they get even more cut up? They've gotta be—

YN: —Hk!

The bandages covering Subaru's cut and wounded hands, were gone.

...How?

No injury at all was visible upon them.

How?!

They were, in fact, hands that were yet to be worked.
