051: I'm in the Trees, I'm in the Breeze

Start from the beginning

He couldn't get the words out, but Rick seemed to get it, and let go of him. "Show us."

For a second, Danny thought he forgot where to go, but his feet found there way back to the house, and though the living room with the dead body, to Tyreese.

He was pale, laying on the floor, and as soon as they were there, Rick rushed into the room, grabbing Tyreese's arm and pulling it up as Glenn helped, blood soaking their hands. Noah stood, hurrying over to Danny by the door, as Michonne prepared her sword.

the cut was clean and quick.

Rick quickly and messily tied it up as he and Glenn got Tyreese to his feet, but he didn't move. He just let them drag him as Michonne lead them out, sword in hand, and they rushed back the way they'd come.

They reached the gate, to find walkers stacked up against it on the other side, the chain being the only thing keeping them separate.

But they had to get Tyreese back. They had to wrap his arm.

"Use the bat." Glenn passed Tyreese to Noah.

"Danny!" Rick called, and Danny rushed over. "Help Noah with Tyreese!"

Danny did as he said, Rick letting go and heading for the walkers, as Danny wrapped one of Tyreese's arms over his. But it was rather useless, given how short he was compared to him.

They made quick work of the walkers, but Danny could see Tyreese's face, now. His eyes wide and unseeing. His feet barely working. His skin an odd green.

Glenn and Rick took him again.

They rushed down the street, and towards the metal wires in the trees.

"Stay with us!" Rick yelled. "Come on, stay with us!"

Michonne and Noah held the wires up, as Glenn and Rick got Tyreese through. Danny went ahead of them, knife out, to kill any walkers that got close.

"Wait, wait wait!" Michonne yelled, as tyreese's foot got stuck in the wire, and a walker stumbled towards them from behind.

"I got it!" Danny climbed over the wires, using the base of one to propel himself up and stab the walker in the head, but his knife fell with it. They got Tyreese's foot free, falling, and Danny abandoned his knife, hurrying after them.

"Take my machete!" Rick yelled back at Danny, as he, Noah, Glenn and Michonne carried tyreese between them, as he was completely out, now. "Grab it from my leg!"

Danny did as he said, grabbing the machete with the red handle. But there were no walkers around.

They shoved him into the car, laying him down across the centre seats.

"Dan, get in the back!" Rick yelled, as he shut the door on them. "You know how to stop bleeding, wrap his arm as best you can."

"But I've never-"

"Tell Glenn what to do, then!"

They all loaded into the car, Danny doing as Rick said, as Noah got Tyreese sitting up. As the car began moving, Danny climbed over the seat, sitting beside Tyreese. He was missing the same arm as Danny, now.

He pulled off his belt, and tied it around what remained of Tyreese's arm, poking a new hole in it for the clasp, ignoring the others as they talked or argued.

But so much blood had been lost already, more pouring onto the seat.

He tried to think. Could they burn it? He could heat up the machete, now sitting on the ground. He could press his stump against the engine.

he tried wrapping the towel around it tighter, using his teeth, when Tyreese spoke.

"Turn it off."

Danny looked up at him. "What?"

"What'd he say?" Rick glanced back. "Danny, what'd he say?"

Danny could feel it in his chest - just like he could with Sophia. He didn't need to look at Tyreese's eyes - bruised and unseeing. He didn't need to check his pulse. He felt him leave, like a piece of his soul had snapped off and gone with him.

"Michonne." His voice cracked, his hands shaking.

She glanced back. "Stop the car."

"We need to get back." Rick said. "If we-"

"Stop the car, Rick."

He did as she said, and she climbed out, Rick following.

They pulled him out, and lay him on the road, where Rick crouched down beside him, and checked his pulse.

Danny didn't get out.  He already knew.

His friend, Tyreese, was dead.

Tyreese was dead.

'We look not at what can be seen, but we look at what cannot be seen. For what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. For we know that if the Earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God. A house not made from hands, eternal in the heavens. In the heavens.'

More about Danny's emotions in the next chapter, this one is just written similar to the show.

also, Rick sees danny similarly to how dan sees himself. Like, he sees him as weaker than Carl, and as a softy and too good and shit, so that's why he wanted him to go with them, so he could toughen up. I kind of hate s5 Rick with Danny for how much danger he puts him in, but I promise it gets better
