No one remembers the forgotten, except the walls that held their last breath.
The house had stood a century too long, its bones creaking with stories no one cared to hear. People called it haunted, cursed, a place of shadows best left to rot. But within its silence lingered more than malice — a name unspoken, a face unseen, a heart that once beat and had been cast aside.
The hunter did not yet know it, but he was stepping into a mausoleum not of stone, but of memory. And within it, something waited — not for release, but for remembrance.
---
The autumn sky hung low as Ren Tsukishiro stood before the Victorian mansion, its windows like empty eyes staring back. Commission papers crinkled in his pocket, though he hardly needed them; the air itself hummed with the residue of restless souls. He was used to this — shadows clinging to wallpaper, whispers in the woodwork. But this place felt different. Older. Expectant.
The front doors groaned open at his touch, wood swollen with damp, as if the house itself exhaled in relief or warning. The smell of dust and mildew pressed down, mingled with something faintly sweet — not rot, not entirely floral, but unsettlingly in between.
Inside, wallpaper sagged like drooping skin, chandeliers hung like skeletal ribs. The floorboards creaked beneath his boots, not just with weight but with the hollow protest of something long starved of footsteps.
As Ren advanced, he felt the mansion shift around him. Curtains stirred though no wind passed, and the hush of the air seemed to pulse faintly, like a slowed heartbeat. He froze when a sound rippled through the silence: a piano.
A melody — distant, hesitant, as though drifting from another century. The notes were clear, fragile as glass, and impossibly real.
Ren’s instincts told him to raise his guard, yet the music threaded through him, tugging him deeper inside. He crossed a vast, dust-shrouded foyer where a grand staircase spiraled upward like a frozen wave. He paused, the music swelling faintly from somewhere beyond, echoing down a hallway lined with portraits whose eyes seemed to follow.
It was less a choice than an inevitability when his steps carried him toward the sound.
At the end of the corridor, where moonlight pooled weakly through broken glass, the melody ceased. The silence that followed was heavier than sound.
And there — standing in the parlor, as if he had been waiting all along — was the boy.
Ren froze the moment he saw him.
The boy standing in the hall was a figure painted in gold and ivory. His hair, pale as sunlight caught in silk, framed a face almost too delicate for a man — sharp and soft all at once, unsettling in its beauty. His clothes blurred the line between gentleman and doll: ruffles spilling from a high collar, a fitted waist, and a jacket that fell into a graceful half-skirt. Long legs, pale as porcelain, were drawn into stockings patterned with dark crosses, the contrast making him look even more unearthly.
He was beautiful in a way that felt wrong — not because it was flawed, but because it was too perfect, too carefully made, like something the world had never deserved.
The hallway seemed to breathe with them, shadows clinging to the edges like watchful things. Ren’s hand hovered over the charm at his belt, the one meant to bind restless spirits, yet he hesitated.
Shion’s gaze lingered on him, steady and unafraid. “So you’re the one haunting this place,” Ren said at last, his voice low, sharpened to hide the unease clawing its way up his throat.
The boy smiled faintly, though it never touched his eyes. “Haunting? No. I’ve simply been left behind.”
The words, fragile and matter-of-fact, struck deeper than Ren expected. Every instinct screamed to complete the job — to sever the soul before it grew dangerous. That was what he always did. That was what he should do.
