The air in the lecture hall was thick with the usual midday lethargy, a collective sigh of a hundred students who would rather be anywhere else. But for me, it was just a classroom, a means to an end. My name is Scarlett Valencia. I was a student, a planner, a list-maker, and I lived in a world of my own making. I was a world away from the kind of people who were the center of attention, the people who were the subject of every whispered conversation.

And in this specific lecture hall, the undisputed center of attention was a man named Orion Esquivel. He was the kind of handsome that didn't just turn heads; it made people stop and stare. His features were as sharp and defined as if they were carved from stone, a strong, clean jawline, a straight nose, and dark, almost black hair that fell perfectly over his forehead. But it was his eyes that were the most arresting. A shade of green so deep and startling, they seemed to hold a universe of unspoken thoughts. He carried an air of aloofness, a quiet arrogance that was a wall he built around himself. He rarely spoke to anyone he didn't know and never seemed to seek out new friends. He was a lone planet, and everyone else just orbited him, hoping for a fleeting glimpse of light. I had seen him around campus, of course, but he was just another face to me. A very, very good-looking face, but still, just a face.

I, on the other hand, was content to remain in my own corner. With my long, dark, wavy hair cascading down my shoulders and eyes that, like his, were a deep shade of green, I might have been considered noticeable. But I preferred to just be me: a serious student, a friend to a few, and not the type to get flustered by a pretty face.

Professor Alcaraz, a man known for his unconventional and sometimes cruel methods of teaching, clapped his hands together. "Good afternoon, everyone! Today, we will be selecting your partners for the entire semester. This is a five-month project, so make sure you get to know each other well. I've decided to make the pairings completely random. No swapping, no begging. This is an experiment in forced collaboration and, shall we say, social harmony."

A wave of groans swept through the room, but my eyes remained fixed on my notebook. I was mentally preparing my approach, already planning how to make the best of whatever partner I got. I was in this class to learn, to get a good grade. I wasn't here for the social experiment.

The professor began to read the names from a list on his tablet. The tension in the room was palpable, a quiet buzzing of anxiety and anticipation. I could hear the hushed whispers of the girls around me, all hoping to be paired with one person. But I just kept writing, jotting down notes on the lecture.

"Partner number twelve: Orion Esquivel..."

A collective breath was held. Everyone was looking at him. I could feel the energy shift, the air suddenly thick with suppressed excitement. And then, the professor read the second name.

"... and Scarlett Valencia."

The sound of my own name, paired with his, felt like a jolt of electricity. I looked up, a calm acknowledgment in my eyes. The room went silent for a moment before a wave of hushed whispers and jealous glances washed over me. I saw some girls give me a look of pure envy, as if I had just won the lottery. I heard a girl near me let out a frustrated sigh. I could practically feel the collective dagger stares pointed at my back.

But I didn't blush. I didn't giggle. I didn't gasp. I just nodded once, a brief acknowledgment that I had heard the professor. I glanced at Orion. He was already looking at me, his intense green eyes holding mine for a brief moment. He looked... unimpressed. As if he had expected this, expected the usual fanfare. He just gave me a small, almost imperceptible nod back.

When class ended, I calmly packed my things. I didn't rush, didn't try to get to him before the other girls. I just made my way out of the lecture hall, and as I stepped into the busy corridor, I saw him walking alone, a human magnet with a force field around him.
