The house was asleep. The kind of quiet that felt heavy, pressing down on the walls.
Daniella lay on her side, eyes half-lidded, listening to Jun's steady breathing in the bed across the room. Her mind had just started to drift when—
Thump.
It was faint. Almost small enough to dismiss as the old pipes. But her eyes opened fully.
She stared at the ceiling. Waited.
Nothing.
Her head sank back into the pillow. And then—
Thump.
Louder. Closer.
Her heart gave a single hard thud against her ribs. She sat up, hair sliding over her shoulder, scanning the dim room.
"Jun?" Her voice was soft wrap in a whisper, testing as she called out his name.
No response.
She slid off the bed, bare feet brushing cold against the wooden floor. Crossed to his side "Jun" This time her voice was sharper.
He groaned, rolling toward her, voice low and sandpaper rough "What is it?"
"Did you hear that?" She whispered.
He blinked, frowning, then stilled, his head tilting just enough to listen.
At first, nothing. Then—
A floorboard groaned somewhere down the hall. Not the kind that happened by accident.
The frown deepened. His eyes sharpened.
Without a word, Jun swung his legs over the side of the bed. His hand slid under the nightstand, fingers closing around cold metal.
The dull glint of a pistol caught the moonlight.
"Stay close" His voice was low.
She didn't argue, but her pulse was climbing.
The hallway was a tunnel of shadows, the dim nightlight from the kitchen barely reaching them.
Minghao's door opened a crack. "You heard it too?"
Jun gave a short nod, gun low at his side. Wonwoo and Jihoon emerged from the darkness behind Minghao, eyes narrowed.
Jun's voice was a whisper. "It's coming from Chan's room"
They moved together, slow but deliberate, breathing through their mouths to keep quiet. Every footstep felt loud against the wood.
Daniella's eyes darted to every shadow, every corner. Her hands clenched at her sides.
Jun reached the door first. His free hand rose — three fingers.
Three. Two. One.
He pushed the door open in a swift motion.
Empty.
The bed was a mess, covers tangled like someone had been yanked from them mid-sleep. A pillow lay on the floor, its corner torn.
The window gaped wide open. Curtains swayed in the icy draft.
"Shit" Jun whispered under his breath.
Jun's eyes scanned quickly— the bed, closet, under the desk but nothing. He crossed the room in quick strides, leaned out the open window.
The yard below was silent. No movement. No voices.
When he turned back, his voice was edged steel. "They're gone"
