Lucy had been avoiding him.
Tim had been letting her.
It was working — barely — until the call came in.
---
A warehouse fire, possible arson, possible suspects still inside. The kind of case that needed all hands on deck.
And because the universe clearly hated them, they were paired up.
---
“Ready?” Tim asked, clipped and professional as they pulled up.
Lucy nodded. “Always.”
They didn’t talk about the last time they saw each other. They didn’t talk about the knock on his door or the words they’d both said too quickly. But the silence between them wasn’t empty — it was heavy, charged, full of everything unsaid.
---
Inside the building, smoke curled around them. Their radios crackled with updates, but all Lucy could hear was his voice when he spoke to her. Short commands. Quick reassurances. Always watching her, even when she pretended not to notice.
When the fire was out and the suspect in custody, they stayed behind for the scene report. Just the two of them in the dim, ashy air.
“You okay?” he asked finally.
She met his eyes. “Depends. Are you going to keep pretending you don’t care?”
His breath hitched, but before he could answer, their radios called them back to the station.
