"Avery being manipulated by any guy who gives her more than two seconds of attention." He said, not looking over at Enzo as he spoke, his eyes continued to be fixated on Seraphina and the rose blush that danced across her nose.
"We can have any girl groveling at our feet in no time at all," Enzo reminded him, looking over at Seraphina and Theo.
"Yeah, but Avery should know better. She's smarter than this." Mattheo said with slight bitterness in his voice. His eyes did not leave Seraphina's face for even a second as she tilted her head to the side, watching Theo talk.
"Does that bother you, Mattheo?" Enzo asked him teasingly. He was getting a kick out of seeing how worked up he was getting.
Mattheo finally tore his eyes away from Seraphina just long enough to see the stupid smirk that Enzo was giving him and realized that Enzo was just trying to egg him on, and he was falling headfirst into it.
"Oh, piss off, Berkshire." He muttered, shaking his head a little, he could believe that whatever Enzo was doing was starting to work.
"I'll take that as a yes." Enzo laughed, sitting back in his seat triumphantly.
Mattheo rolled his eyes but didn't deny it either. It did bother him. Why? He wasn't sure. He couldn't figure out why it bothered him. It made sense that Rosier pissed him off because the guy was a complete asshole. But he knew that Theo had what he believed to be real feelings for her. As Theo's best friend, he should have been happy that they were speaking again. Mattheo, however, was far from happy.
"It was quite sickening, Sera, the way he spoke about you," Theo explained to her in a soft, comforting tone.
After charms, they had done what Daphne had suggested that morning. Theo had taken her to his favorite spot down at the Black Lake, one that neither of them was a stranger to. They had both dumped their cloaks and school bags against a tree and were standing at the edge of the water.
Theo was staring at Seraphina as she flicked stones across the water's surface. Her expression was unreadable as she did what she promised him and was hearing him out about him and Mattheo's run-in with Evan while she had been in detention with Umbridge.
"Then what happened?" Seraphina asked him as she reached down to pick up another stone. She rolled it around in her hand to make sure it was smooth enough.
"Then Mattheo told him, 'You bring her back in anything less than perfect condition and I'll make sure you're the one that can't walk.' in that menacing tone that usually makes people back off," Theo explained with his hands in his pockets as he watched her carefully, trying to figure out if she was believing anything he was saying right now.
"Did it?" Seraphina asked as she tossed the stone across the lake, not taking her eyes off it as it skipped across the water four times before disappearing below the surface.
"Did it?" Theo asked, his eyebrows knitting together as he watched her, trying to figure out what she was thinking.
"Make him back off," Seraphina said as she rolled a stone over with her shoe before picking it up.
"No, not really. He doesn't seem afraid of Mattheo." He told her with a small shrug.
"I'm not either. He's really not much to be afraid of." She said, wiping dirt off her stone, she looked back at Theo, who smiled a little at her.
"That's because he'd never lay a hand on you and you know it," Theo told her honestly.
"The bruise on my arm begs to differ. You watched him slam me into the wall in the corridor. He definitely would if I pushed him fair enough." She said, looking away from him and back at the lake.
