Diego's POV:
Lucía's been walking on egg shells around be since the other night when she found out.
It's how I cope...
She's also been randomly checking in on me like she's my parent instead of my younger sister. I don't really know how I feel about it. On one hand I kinda enjoy the company but in the other I can't really relate to a 17 year old girl. I mean we have one thing in common we're related and have an asshole dad.
I was snapped back into reality when I hear someone sit next to me in the beach I look over and guess who. Lucía, she was watching the waves with me her curly hair put in a messy bun. She had sun glasses on and she looked like she walks guys like a dog for a living.
"I need to tell you something important" she says looking over at me I couldn't see her eyes behind the sunglasses but her voice was serious.
"What is it" I ask chuckling nervously something I subconsciously do when someone needs to tell me something that they classify as 'important'.
"I'm pansexual" she says looking over at me nervous but serious "I've known for a while and I haven't told dad yet" she continues. It's probably a good thing she doesn't tell dad, he's a homophobic bitch.
"Well your still my sister" I say looking at her not knowing what to do and it's low-key making me feel awkward. "And yeah don't tell dad he's gonna flip if he finds out" I say patting her on the back awkwardly.
She looks at me before bursting out laughing "God dude can you make this any more awkward" she says basically crying with laughter.
---
Me and Lucía were in the taco bell parking lot sharing a party back when she stops eating to look at this person maybe a year younger than her. The person was sipping a drink I couldn't tell if they were a guy or a girl but I didn't care because it's California
"That person is so fine" she comments staring at the person who's across the parking lot. "Wait a damn second that's Kai" she says blushing.
"First off language, and second off Kai who" I say looking confused on this mystery person my sisters blushing over.
"Ok your going to hate me but Kai is Jett's sibling" she says looking at me still blushing slightly like a teenager...
Wait she is a teenager...
"Wait they?" I say tilting my head confused.
Lucía looks at me like I'm stupid. "Kai's non-binary stupid" she says rolling her eyes like I was some kind of boomer.
"They look nothing like Jett or his parents" I say looking at her as I take a big bite out of my taco.
"Their adopted, that doesn't matter because their so fine but I can never tell their sexuality" she says sighing as he sits back and finishes her hard shell taco like a depressed turtle.
"As long as you don't get pregnant do what you want" I say shrugging as I also finish my food.
She groans, collapsing against the seat. "Why are you like this?"
"Because someone has to be."
We finish our tacos in silence after that - two weird siblings in a busted car, trying to make sense of their mess of a family... and maybe a few crushes too.
A few minutes later, Lucía squeals, slapping my arm and digging through her tote bag like it owed her money.
"They're walking this way-oh my god, do I look okay? Where's my lip gloss?"
"You're literally wearing sunglasses at night," I say, deadpan, watching her blindly smear glittery pink across her mouth. "You look like a raccoon with a makeup sponsorship."
She flips me off just as Kai strolls up to the car.
They're wearing ripped jeans, boots that look like they've been places, and a faded "Support Your Local Deadbeat" tee. Their black hair's in a bun, and they've got a silver chain around their neck that glints in the Taco Bell parking lot lights.
Kai stops in front of the Demon, head tilted.
"This yours?" they ask, voice casual but curious.
I nod. "Yeah. Dodge Demon. 6.2-liter V8. Pink camo stripes courtesy of bad decisions and alcohol."
Kai lets out a low whistle. "Damn. She's a beast."
Lucía giggles. Giggles. Like she's in a Disney Channel reboot.
"She purrs too," I say, tapping the hood like I'm suddenly proud of my personality for the first time in weeks. "You into cars?"
Kai shrugs. "Not really. Just think loud, scary things are cool."
I glance at Lucía, who is currently looking like she forgot how to breathe.
"She likes scary things too," I say casually. "Roller coasters, true crime podcasts, and our dad's emotional repression."
Lucía slaps my shoulder again, hard this time. "Diego."
Kai laughs a genuine one and it makes Lucía blink like she's just been blessed.
"I'm Kai," they say, offering a hand like we're at a job interview.
Lucía reaches out way too fast. "Lucía. Reyes. That's my last name. But also first name. Wait no-"
"She's having a stroke," I mutter, grabbing a napkin to pretend I'm cleaning the dashboard just to hide my grin.
Kai seems completely unfazed. They tuck their hands into their back pockets and rock on their heels. "You guys around here often?"
"Only when she's stalking people she thinks are hot," I reply. "Which, lucky for you, is now."
Lucía looks like she's about to die on the spot. "I will end you."
"Oh come on," I say, gesturing between them. "You two should hang out. Go to the arcade. Grab coffee. Race stolen shopping carts. Whatever Gen Z lovebirds do these days."
Kai raises an eyebrow. "Are you setting me up with your sister?"
I shrug. "I mean... yeah?"
Lucía groans into her hands.
Kai chuckles again, gaze flicking back to her. "I wouldn't say no."
Lucía peeks up from her fingers. "Wait-seriously?"
"Seriously."
And just like that, my weird little sister has a date with Jett's sibling. What could possibly go wrong?
