I pretend not to notice the stare-off Luka and Adrien are having over the top of my head and slip on the coat like it's a lifeline. In the cold air, it feels like one.
Brushing the hair out of my face I reach down and grab the train of my dress before the two can fight over it like dogs.
"I can't deal with any more emotions tonight so could the two of you try to behave and enjoy the view please."
It's a statement, not a question, and I grip the railing hard while brushing past them up the stairs.
When I make it out onto the roof the others have settled on the ground next to the edge overlooking the city. The New Year's Eve ball peeks between two buildings and lights swirl in the sky above.
I walk over to Juleka and cuddle into her side underneath the tablecloth blanket. Felix raises the bottle high and takes a swig, cringing as he gulps it down.
"This is as-"
"Language."
Caleb sings the word, which makes it even more ironic. I slip off my heels and take the bottle from the blonde's hands.
"The only thing the bartenders didn't care about."
I sip it and hand it off to Adrien, who has settled down next to me. He smells it and flinches back in disgust, passing it to Luka, who takes it like a champ.
"I think I'll pass on drinking tonight."
"I won't, I'll drink for both of us blondie."
I snicker at Caleb's poor attempt at a nickname.
"I think they're starting to count down!"
Juleka's right; they've started counting early, which is pretty normal. For some reason, people like to start counting when there's only a minute left until midnight. Caleb russells in his coat pocket hurriedly and pulls out a cloth wrapped around something.
"We don't have a table to sit under but I stole grapes from the kitchen."
He passes them out to the others who look at him like theirs, a second head growing from his neck. The laugh I let out feels like the first real breath I've taken all night.
"There's a New Year tradition in some countries that if you eat grapes under a table at midnight then there will be prosperity and love in your life in the new year."
Caleb's already shoving them in his mouth with still thirty seconds to midnight, he mumbles past the green mush boyishly.
"I think it's supposed to be twelve but who's counting?"
The others have a brief chuckle at his goofiness and start to eat their grapes, Felix turns up his nose. I shoot him a look.
"You're gonna eat those grapes because you need all the help you can get with Kagami."
His eyes are practically venomous but he does pop a few into his mouth. I break away from the look to watch the ball, they've made it to fifteen.
"Guys it's time!"
Juleka and I stand up, grapes already forgotten, and begin to count loudly. The guys join us and we cheer when it hits midnight.
"Happy New Year!"
I pull Juleka into a tight hug, then go about hugging the others besides Felix who wouldn't appreciate it. We watch confetti rain down in Times Square from a distance, and I can't feel the bite of the cold as much anymore with my friends standing by my side.
