There's a kind of silence that feels like it's pressing on your lungs-thick, choking, and cold also gross to. That's what our estate feels like now. I'm sitting at the grand piano like some tragic painting, fingers hovering over the keys, pretending I might play. I don't. Not since my father threw my future down like a losing hand in poker. He watched me like he already owned me, didn't even blink when I finished. Just sipped his scotch like he was making a business deal. And now I'm the deal. When my mother appears in the doorway-barely holding it together-I already know what she's going to say. "He's here. Kieran wants to see you." Great. Can't wait. I strut down the hall like I'm not being led to a lion's den, because if I'm going down, I'm doing it in heels.
The study smells like expensive wood and bad decisions. He's standing there like a villain fresh off the runway, all black suit and frozen expression. "Estelle," he says, like the word tastes expensive. I tilt my head. "Kieran. How charming." He skips the pleasantries, of course. "We're to be married. I expect obedience." I blink. "Wow. along minute goes by us You're really opening strong." He steps closer. I don't flinch. He's testing me. I test back. "You'll learn what I expect," he says. "You'll learn I don't fetch," I snap. His jaw twitches, like I'm a puzzle he can't quite solve. "You have spirit." "And you have control issues. We all have our crosses to bear." He leans in, voice low. "You'll still be mine." I smile, sweet and lethal. "Keep dreaming."
