Cha Soo-jin is the kind of student who always has her head in the books and her eyes on the prize. Straight-A's, organized notes, perfect attendance-she knows what she wants and doesn't let anything distract her. Here comes Sim Jaeyun: campus heartt...

[Tuesday — January 7 — 3:58 p.m.]
Room 3-B, also known as the "Multi-Purpose Room," was decorated with hanging paper hearts and soft red lights someone had already started testing for the Valentine's Day event. It smelled faintly of glue, dusty curtains, and the strawberry air freshener someone overused.
And sitting on two chairs in front of a foldable table—an uncomfortable distance apart—were Cha Soo-jin and Sim Jaeyun.
The tension was unbearable.
On the other side of the table sat a student council panel: Jay, Yeji (who had miraculously "volunteered" to help with auditions), and one overly enthusiastic junior from Class 2-2 who kept adjusting the camcorder for their "chemistry check."
"Alright," Jay said, tapping the paper in front of him like he was leading a talent show. "You both were recommended anonymously, and based on your academic and... ehem, public chemistry, you've been selected for a screen test."
Soo-jin turned to glare at Yeji, who avoided eye contact with the most suspicious grin on her face.
Jaeyun, on the other hand, looked like he hadn't slept in days—but still managed to smirk slightly. "So we're doing screen tests now? Should've brought my portfolio."
Soo-jin rolled her eyes and thought, 'How could he act like this—as if nothing happened.'
"No need," Yeji said sweetly. "Your entire personality is already on record."
Soo-jin crossed her arms. "Can we just get this over with?"
Jay cleared his throat. "Sure. First task—introduce the event together. Pretend you're both onstage. Smile. You know, act like you don't want to kill each other."
Soo-jin straightened in her seat and pasted on her usual polite expression. "Good afternoon, everyone. I'm Cha Soo-jin from Class 3-1—"
"And I'm Sim Jaeyun," he added quickly, his tone playful. "Also from 3-1. And apparently, your surprise duo for this year's Valentine's Day celebration."
There was a pause.
Soo-jin gave a stiff nod. "We're honored to host this event—"
"—even though one of us was definitely blackmailed into it," Jaeyun finished smoothly, glancing sideways at her.
She shot him a tight-lipped mocking smile. "Oh, don't worry. That feeling is mutual." There they go again—as if natural—still roasting each other without them doing it intentionally.
Yeji bit back a laugh. Jay scribbled something on the form.
"Perfect," said the junior recording. "Now... next task. A mock segment. Pretend you're announcing the Best Couple Award. Be fun. Be flirty. Pretend you like each other, at least."
