The Quiet Between Us

Prologue & Details

(This story doesn't completely go along with the MCU or the comics, it's a mix of those two and my imagination.)

Dalia is nineteen (born 1997) and recently escaped from the Red Room.
She was taken when she was thirteen. the Red Room had owned her, for six years.
During her time in the red room she was coached by the winter soldier, trained in ballet, taught to shoot, forced to be a machine.
The girls in the red room were built not to
have emotions, identities, or past lives.

But Dalia had exactly that.

When Dalia was growing up she had a deaf sister.
when she was in the Red Room she got nicknames, Dally, Dal, and Doll.
The worst part? She had emotions, she would rarely let them show but they were nevertheless there.

One day the Winter Soldier shows for a lesson, stiff and measured. He never moved unless needed , only spoke when necessary.
He used his eyes, to watch, to talk, maybe to feel?

He watched as girls whispered to her and she would whisper back, he watched her sign, and he would look in the halls. She would let out a little smile.

Dally started signing towards the Soldier, maybe he understood maybe he didn't, but he watched. He payed attention.

Dally signed to him every day he was there, until one day he wasn't. Then never was again. Dally moved on, but she never forgot.

When Dally got out of the Red Room her family was gone, her sister was married in Europe.
She decided that she would go do what Natasha did, become a good person. (Or at least better.)

Since 2016 (after the Sokovia accords incident) Dally has been working with and for the Avengers.

James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, the Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes. Ninety nine years old, biologically thirty(born 1917).

In the mid 1940's James was drafted into the army, World War II was ongoing. James became Sargent Barnes.

James was serving in the 107th when him and his team got captured, and James got exposed to testing, experiments, torture.

James' best friend came to save him, Steve, and now Captain America. Steve didn't only save James but 400 other captives as well.

In early 1945 James followed his best friend into a mission he never left . During this mission he fell out of a train into an icy ravine.

HYDRA found James, not Steve, not military, but by HYDRA. They took James and his left arm, replacing it with metal.

Eventually HYDRA begins wiping his memories, frequently enough that he doesn't remember becoming the Winter Soldier, he doesn't remember his name.

The Winter Soldier ends up coaching in the Red Room, it was a transaction HYDRA got intel, the Red Room got the Winter Soldier.

There was one girl, she was different. She was less numb, she had a small flicker. The other girl's whispered to her, she whispered back.

She knew ASL, she signed to him. She looked at him in the halls, she gifted him with smiles.

2014
After the HYDRA take down James escaped, he was on the run for two years trying to remember and figure out who he was. James ended up in Romania, that was until he got framed for a crime.

2016
James was forced out of hiding, and taken into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody. This was the first time James got to see Steve, and actually remember him, in years. Then the Sokovia accords came, the avengers broke into two parts, for and against the accords.

By the time too much damage has already occurred, the avengers are split apart and were in hiding, James decided that he was never going to be the Winter Soldier again. James goes to Wakanda to remove the trigger words from inside him.
