"What are you doing." I ask.
"You watch too much of this," He tells me. "It's what's wrong with your brain."
"Give it back." I say, lifting up.
So begin a battle for the remote. I climb over onto his lap, straddling him as I fight with him to get the remote back. His hands one up in the air, and the other grabs my side. He pinches me hard.
"Ouch," I say.
"It's my trun, You little nimp," He calls me.
"That's not fair, Adam," I tell him as I grab my side.
"It's didn't hurt that bad, just a little pinch," He says. Truning the channel on the TV.
"I'm telling dad," I tell him.
"Tell your dad I don't care," He says. "Get off me while you're at it," He says.
"No, you want to watch TV. You're going to have to watch around me," I tell him.
His eyes come to mine "Don't fucking play with me Sabine"
All my weight falls on his lap "I'm not moving" I tell him being childish I wiggle on his lap a little.
"Get up bean" He tells me his grip on me returning to my side.
"Adam your hurting me" I scream as his nails dig into me.
"You going move" He says going still all at once.
"No, I'm not going move" I tell him.
Both his hands go to my hips now not pinching me like he was but holding me.
"Shh" He says.
"I will not."
"Shut up Bean" He tells me.
But I keep talking rambling about how I'm going tell his mom when they get home and how much trouble he was going get into. All at once his lips clam mine I grunt as he kisses me hard. My body stiff up then relaxes into his arms as it deepens.
That's when I hear it something outside. Adam backs away and I just sit there in a daze. I couldn't believe he just kissed me. My very first kiss was by my step brother.
"Shh" He tells me and I nod.
We listen to the noise from outside. Whoever it was didn't know that the kitchen door was unlocked because they didn't even try going that way. Coming around to the front door I jump in Adam's lap as they start shaking the door knob that's when our alarm goes off. Adam's arms warp around me tighter as if to comfort me. We still don't move not until we hear whoever cranking his vehicle and speeding out the driveway.
"Who do you think" I start.
"I don't know, homeland should be calling here shortly" He says. His phone rings right after he answered right away "Yes, there was someone outside our house. It's just my step sister and me our parents are out" He says "Yes ma'am, thank you, yes I'll call as soon as I hang up." He says hanging up.
"They sending someone" I ask.
"Yeah" He says "I need to call mom" he says.
He finally released me, I feel a little dizzy as I stand up. He calls his mom and the next I know the whole house is covered in police. Dad and Molly are there.
"You didn't see what they looked like" office asked Adam.
"No, we were just watching TV" He says it was a small lie.
But I understand we didn't really want to tell the police or our parents we were fighting over the remote. And definitely didn't want to tell them I was sitting in his lap at the time.
Molly stood by Adam as they talked to the officer "You're son is really brave Mrs Landrace"
Molly similes "I'm just glad that they are both safe" she says.
All I could think about was that kiss. My eyes flicker to him. I swear he was looking at me and looked off when I looked over at him. Was he thinking about the kiss to.
I bite down on my lip as I stood there thinking. He had saved my life and I was grateful for that.
"You alright" Dad asked.
"Yeah, I think so."
"Looks like we're going have to start locking that kitchen up." He says.
I nod. "I think I'm going up if that's alright." I tell my dad.
"Alright, if you need anything."
I smile. "I know where to find you," I say, heading up.
I don't know if that kiss had changed anything. But it felt like something had shifted. The next couple of days, we avoid each other. I didn't even tell my mom about the kiss. I was too caught off guard embarrassed. I don't know what I was shocked. For better words.
It would be mouths after the accident that we would find ourselves alone aging. Everything had settled down afterwards, and they never found the person that tried to break in. Dad had started locking the kitchen up so random people couldn't just walk in anymore. The man from across the street didn't like that too well.
It was a school night, so I was in my room doing some last-minute school work. When I hear someone go by my door. Nothing unusual. I ignore it the first time. But then they go by a second and third time just back and forth. I look at the door. The light from the hallway glows up under it, and I can see the person's feet as they pace back and forth.
What in God's green earth is going on. Getting up, I grab some shorts because all I'm wearing is a tank top and panties at this point. Pulling them on, I slowly take a peek out into the hallway. Adam passes outside my doorway.
"What are you doing?" I ask.
He jumps, and I suppress the urge to laugh out loud. He looks at me for a while.
"Bean, I didn't know you were here," He says.
"I've been here since yesterday," I tell him.
"Right, can we talk?"
"About." I ask.
"Look, Bean, I need to talk to you, so it's ether a yes or a no," He says.
"If you're going be mean to me, it's a no."
I see him breathe out he steps me, and my eyes widen. OK, he's getting into my personal space now. Putting a hand on my door frame, he glances down at the other end of the hallway before back at me.
"We need to talk about the other night, Bean," He says, lowering his voice.
And I know his talking about the kiss.
