After the bullying incident, I made it my mission to create a safe space for Isabella. I started having her shadow me more often, partly to protect her from the other interns and partly because I genuinely enjoyed her company and brilliant mind.
She was like a little sponge, absorbing everything I taught her with an eagerness that was refreshing. But I also noticed how she struggled with basic self-care - she forgot to eat, didn't take breaks, and seemed to have no idea how to advocate for her own needs.
"Isabella," I said one afternoon when I found her studying in the library during what should have been her lunch break, "when did you last eat?"
She looked up at me with those big brown eyes, looking guilty. "I had coffee this morning?"
I sighed and sat down beside her. "Sweetheart, that's not food. Come on, we're getting you a proper meal."
"But I need to study-"
"You need to eat," I said firmly, closing her textbook. "Your brain can't function without fuel, little one."
I took her to the cafeteria and watched her eat, making sure she finished her sandwich and fruit. She was so grateful for the attention and care that it made my chest tight with emotion.
"Dr. Montgomery," she said quietly, "can I ask you something?"
"Of course, baby. And it's Addison, remember?"
"Why are you being so nice to me? Nobody else... I mean, everyone else thinks I'm just some weird kid who doesn't belong here."
I reached over and covered her small hand with mine. "Because you're brilliant and kind and deserving of kindness in return. And because someone needs to look out for you."
