haewon, gotak, baku, and now juntae all ran in silence to the hospital. they entered as fast as they could. when they arrived to the icu, haewon couldn't believe it, everything all over again. flashbacks from the first time she saw suho strapped to a monitor machine.
haewon's body just didn't have a reaction anymore. only her eyes watering at the sight. sieun, pale, bruised and with thin cables connected to his chest. dried blood and adhesive strips covering his face. everything sounded muted to her, like she was submerged.
she didn't really move until her knees buckled. gotak caught her just before she hit the ground, lowering her slowly to sit on the cold hospital floor. her body as a whole was trembling as she stared away.
"he's okay." someone said, maybe juntae, or baku, she couldn't care less about a lie. gotak who was crouching beside her, had a hand ghosting over her back, before actually resting it on her. "he's stable, i already asked. they got him in on time."
haewon turned her head, finally meeting his eyes. they were red too, but not crying, just tired. he offered a small, sad smile, like it was his pain in law.
"i hate this... i hate that this keeps happening to us." "i'm so sorry haewon, everything is going to be fine." haewon broke into a soft sob. she covered her mouth with her hand, and leaned against gotak, who instinctively pulled her in. she clung to the sleeve of his jacket, forehead pressed to his collar.
after a while they all sat in the waiting room. sieun's mom came out of the icu. all of them stood up. "how is he?" baku asked.. "his condition is stable now. go home, it's getting late." she said.
"we can stay. we're all sieun's good friends." "no, that's not what i meant." the four of them stood in silence, haewon fearing what she had to say.
"i want you all, to leave my son alone. please." haewon closed her eyes, that broke her heart, she couldn't forget everything they had been through together, let alone stop being his friend.
haewon turned on her heel, she was going to leave that damned hospital. "haewon, wait." gotak said as he followed her. "leave me alone, please." she said. "i won't let you walk home alone." "do whatever the fuck you want." she said.
the whole time haewon walked in front of him, she didn't want to walk beside him, to face him. she was mad with the world, with destiny, with fate, with whatever controlled the way everything worked.
they kept walking like that until they reached the quiet street near her house. only distant traffic and a flickering streetlight keeping them attached to reality. haewon stopped. she didn't even bother turning around. he came beside her, not close enough to touch her, but just so she could feel his presence.
"i'm so tired." she muttered. he took his time to answer. "i know." she finally turned to look at him, he looked back. her heart drummed against her chest, she felt it pounding everywhere in her body. she didn't realize she was shaking until she saw his hand twitch, like he wanted to reach out but didn't.
none of them talked. and that electric silence went on for what felt an eternity but were only a matter of seconds. then haewon broke the gaze. "i should go." she murmured. "i'll wait till you're inside." gotak nodded. she just walked to the door, slowly unlocking it, when she entered, she paused and looked back, he was still there. neither said goodnight, not like it was necessary.
the next day
haewon's limbs were sore, crying, fighting, walking, everything came back to her like a ton of bricks. she reached to her bedside table, looking for her phone but was found with a paper. she remembered, the list from last night, she had been able to keep a page.
she stood up from her bed, practically dragging, she got ready and started walking to the police station. something had to stop the union, and she was going to try it to be her. "so you're saying this is an account for stolen motorcycles? do you have evidence this person is receiving money from the buyers." the cop asked.
"do you read?" she said, swollen eyes, leaning back in the chair. "but do you have evidence?" he asked again. "shouldn't the police investigate that?" "i need to have the evidence, i can't investigate otherwise. in the meantime we can hold this for you. why don't you head home for now?" the detective said.
"you know what never mind." haewon grabbed the paper and stood up. as she walked out of the station she could feel presences beside her. 4 guys in front of her. she stopped on her tracks. "you visited the cops? you stole the buyers list from us." one of them said.
"just hit me, will you?" she said as she took a punch to the stomach. she knelt down and the guys lifted her. she was dragged to daesung once again. the guy made her kneel in front of him, so she could watch as he burned the paper.
he dialed a phone number. "we burnt it baekjin." he then held the phone out and handed to her. haewon muttered a small what so he'd know she was listening. "you didn't take a picture of it, did you?" "honestly i should've."
"you really thought a bitch like you could do something to stop us?" baekjin asked. "whatever baekjin, i'm not in the mood for your shit." "you couldn't have done anything with that anyways." he said. "why so anxious then?" "what?" he asked, his voice dropping a bit.
"park hoomin, seo juntae, yeon sieun, go hyuntak, don't mess with them anymore. i'll delete the damn picture then." she said. "do what you want. you'll die there today." "are you going to let that happen, really?" baekjin didn't answer, he just hung the phone.
