TW: Blood

Pain. That was the only thing Kai felt. A deep, raw, all-consuming pain, clawing through his body like fire turned against him. His chest ached. His arms, his legs, every inch of him felt wrong. Blood dripped from the corner of his mouth, warm and thick, and his breaths came in sharp, uneven gasps. He was alive, barley. And then- a voice.
"Kai?"
Weakly, he opened his eyes. The first thing he saw was Cole. Hovering over him, face pale, eyes wide with something terrible, something desperate. His hands were on Kai's shoulders, gripping too tightly, like he was afraid Kai might disappear again.
"Yo- you're alive!" Cole gasped with relief.
Kai tried to speak but all that came out was a chocked cough, and more blood.
Cole's expression dropped. "Shit, you're still bleeding. Just- don't move."
Too late. Kai pushed himself up with trembling arms, biting back a groan. Cole steadied him with a hand on his back and arm His whole body screamed in protest, his vision blurred, but he had to move. The fight wasn't over.
The others were still battling the minions, their weapons clashing in the distance. The city was still burning, the air was still thick with smoke.
And then, a shadow loomed behind Cole. The villain. Raising their hand, summoning another wave of black fire. Cole didn't see it. Kai did. And without thinking, without hesitation, Kai moved. Faster than his body should have let him. Faster than pain could stop him.
He lunged forward, throwing himself between Cole and the attack, his hands bursting into flames. And when the black fire struck, it didn't touch him. His own flames swallowed it whole.
Kai clenched his teeth, bracing himself, feeling the heat surge through him. This time, it didn't hurt. This time, it didn't break him. This time- it obeyed.
The masked figure hesitated. Kai glared. His voice came out rough, blood still dripping from his lips.
"You don't get to touch him."
Cole barley had time to register what was going on before a wave of Kai's fire exploded outward, slamming into the villain with enough force to shake the earth beneath them. And for the first time, the villain stumbled.
