Alyona

She approached him as the group started breaking. She had to assure herself that he really existed-- that he wasn't a figment of her imagination.

In her agitated desire to approach him, she knocked into him. She stumbled backward, apologising, He held her by the shoulder-- making sure she wouldn't fall. Not a word passed between them.

She looked up at him, silently thanking. He smiled. For all his attempts to save her; he couldn't-- she was a lost cause by then.

Aiden

Up close, she looked so vulnerable. He wanted to protect her-- when he couldn't even save himself. He couldn't help but smile at her evident mortification.

Holding her by the shoulder, he steadied her. Silently, promising himself that it would be all the contact he would ever have with her.

... But it wasn't. As she started to leave, in a moment of weakness, he heard his own voice:

"Um.. How about a drink?...Later-- after this is over?"

In the blush that crept across her cheeks and in the shy smile she gave as she nodded her consent, he saw his resolve falter...

He did not wish to hurt her with his impending death. But he didn't trust himself to not entangle her further.
