I cringe internally.
"Blue Moon, and yes, she helps manage the band, but I don't know much about it with their secret identities and all."
"You said you're a foster? Well, aren't you lucky?"
Double cringe. These conversations make me want to stab myself with one of the gold-plated steak knives. I put on an innocent act to hide my displeasure, forcing a giggle.
"I'm not sure what you mean."
Caroline pulls at the hem of her low-cut dress a bit and babbles on.
"I just find that being adopted by such an influential individual must be extremely lucky. I can't imagine that your birth parents are better off than Miss. Morris."
My face must have said it all because she started to look panicked, and even August had the common sense to look away from the bar in shock at his date's blatant rudeness. Before I rip her to shreds, I make sure to shoot him with a look of false compassion. If I could melt into the ground at this moment, I would.
"While I can see where you're coming from. I don't see anything lucky about it. If you bring a living being into this world, you have a responsibility towards them."
Her face flushed red, and I needed to restrain myself from giving her the full 'Chloe' special.
"I am very fortunate to have Poppy. But I should stress that in the future it's rude to comment on people's situations-"
I cast a glance to August, who is now standing rather uncomfortably stiff by his date's side, with two drinks in his hands.
"-especially in delicate social environments like this."
I'm tired by the end of the sentence, taking a breath and plastering a thin smile across my lips.
"It was good to see you, August, and nice to meet you, Caroline."
I turn back to the bar before they can respond; my body feels exposed, and my skin feels like it's crawling. I shut my eyes and took a deep breath before finally turning my attention to Felix, not even mustering up the will to be polite.
"What's the hold up?"
To my surprise, he is already looking at me. Scratch that analyzing me. He responds flatly.
"They're looking for a pitcher, so we don't have to keep coming up."
"I hope they don't find it. Anything to keep me away from that table is a good excuse."
He huffs out a breath, not quite a laugh but arguably as close as he can get.
"That's something we can agree on."
We stand in silence, at least between the two of us, for a few beats. The party bustled around us. I'm trying to see if I can distinguish what note the violinist is playing when Felix surprisingly speaks.
