"Why is she so pretty?"
Ling was the epitome of a quiet, introverted office worker. She didn't mind it that way. It meant fewer distractions, more time to focus on numbers and data, and an endless supply of coffee. She didn't need much else to be content. That is, until Orm started working in her department.
Orm was everything Ling wasn't—outgoing, bubbly, and incredibly beautiful. With bright eyes and an easy smile, Orm seemed to light up the room every time she walked in. Ling had caught herself staring at her more times than she would like to admit. But what could someone like Orm possibly see in someone like Ling? It was a constant question that gnawed at her.
It was at lunch one day when Orm casually asked, "Ling, you want to join us today?"
Ling froze. Was Orm talking to her? The girl who had practically spent the last year hiding behind spreadsheets?
"Oh, um..." Ling stammered, her face flushed. "I... I think I'll just stay in today. Thanks."
Orm smiled at her response, unbothered by the rejection. "Okay! Maybe next time."
As Orm walked away, Ling mentally cursed her own social awkwardness. Next time? As if she'd ever have the courage to say yes.
