Me and Jax are playing air hockey in my room before dinner.
Since I'm the only child, my parents gave me a huge room with a balcony.
Along with all the normal room things like a desk and dresser and tv, I have a walk in closet, egg chair, couch, air hockey table, and a whole wall that's a built in bookshelf.
Because there's so much room up here, we all like to hang out in here because it's freaking huge.
I hear my phone go off and I know that is our families' group chat saying that dinner is ready.
I see the puck going straight for my goal before I block it and quickly hit the puck to Jax's side and it goes it.
"OH MY GOSH" Jax yells.
"That's the fourth time I've beat you," I laugh a little as I grab my phone and look through the notifications.
"One more time," he mumbles as we I unplug the airhockey table.
"Dinner's ready."
"But Ame—"
"They're already waiting on us, come on," I say.
"But I'm not even hungry and—"
"I promise you I'll be more than happy to beat you after dinner," I say as I put on my shoes and start walking over to my balcony.
Jax rolls his eyes and follows me out to my balcony and we use the latter to get to the middle of the treehouse.
I look around quickly as we make our way to the other side quickly and can't help but feel a little bit of sadness or nostalgia as I walk through.
It's a Friday night and normally me and Cole would be sneaking ice cream in here once it got dark, but we haven't done that since sophomore year of high school.
The treehouse is dusty and there's board games and Nerf guns and old hockey pucks still laid out.
We still use the treehouse, just not as much as when we were younger. Now it's more so just how we get to each other's houses.
I still love it though. Every so often we all go play a board game or cards out there.
Me and Jax enter into the Evermore house through Chase's window.
For a guy he does always have his room tidy.
We enter into the window, and I feel the soft, cool air of the house.
As we walk through his room and into the hallway, I glance over at his little bookshelf he has by the side of his desk.
He used to tease me all the time for reading books when we were little, so much so where one time Cole got so mad at him for teasing me that he broke his hockey stick and blamed it on Jax.
Jax was literally only like, two, at the time so obviously it wasn't very a believable lie.
Chase's light is turned off and his bed is made. Not perfect, but made nonetheless.
His room may get a little disorganized with clothes not put away, but it's never too messy.
A messy room would be Cole's.
Cole's room gets disgusting. He's always running the roads that I guess he just forgets to pick up after himself.
As we walk through the hallway, I get a glimpse of Cole's room.
His door is half shut, but still, you can see the clothes scattered across the floor, the LED lights on his ceiling and the random empty plates and cups he keeps forgetting to bring back to the kitchen.
We get to the stairs and Jax runs down, so I try and speed up a little to keep up with him.
As we get farther down the stairs, the voices in the kitchen get louder.
"Nice of you too to finally join us," John, the Evermore's dad, says.
"Jax was being a sore loser," I mumble as I take my seat across from Chase and realize that Cole's seat beside me is empty.
Hazel runs up to me and I hear her high pitched little voice struggle as she tries to say my name. "ameel" is about all she can pronounce, but she's smiling and I see her little dimple on her left cheek.
"Pretty girl," I say with a smile as I pick her up and into my lap.
We start filling our plates when I see Cole is nowhere to be found.
"Uh where's," I clear my throat, "where's Cole?"
I see Chase look up from making his plate, but he doesn't say anything.
"He's staying over at a friends house tonight," John says.
"Oh," I mumble, nonchalantly as I begin to make my plate too.
I've had the biggest crush on Cole ever since sophomore year of high school.
I don't know why one day suddenly I felt like we weren't anymore on the same level being best friends.
All the sudden I felt like he was so much better, cooler, funnier, and then everytime I was hanging out with him felt like a desperate attempt for me to try and be pretty enough, or cool enough or make him laugh, anything for him to think that I was someone he could be with.
Luckily I've kept it really nonchalant and no one else knows just how much I like Cole.
I'm pretty chill about the whole thing.
