Beomgyu groaned as he slammed his alarm clock off the nightstand, its shrill ringing making his headache worse. He had slept through his first three alarms, again. Throwing off his blanket, he rushed to get dressed, nearly tripping over his own feet as he shoved his books into his bag. Another morning, another disaster waiting to happen.

His life had always been a series of unfortunate events. No matter how hard he tried, something always went wrong. If it wasn’t spilling coffee on himself, it was missing the bus. If it wasn’t forgetting his homework, it was tripping over his own feet in the hallway. He had long since accepted that he was just cursed with bad luck.

Today was no different. As he rushed to catch the bus, his shoelace got caught on a loose brick, sending him tumbling forward onto the pavement. Groaning, he picked himself up, only to realize that his phone had skidded across the sidewalk, landing screen-down in a puddle. He retrieved it with a sigh, his day already off to a terrible start.

By the time he made it to college, he was already dreading what was to come. His classmates were used to his clumsiness, and though most were kind about it, he could still feel their amused stares every time he did something ridiculous. Like when he accidentally knocked over an entire stack of books in the library or tripped over absolutely nothing in the cafeteria.

He just wanted one normal day. One day where he didn’t make a complete fool of himself.

The next few days passed with the same miserable luck. He slept through alarms, spilled drinks on his notes, and even walked straight into a glass door, earning laughter from a few onlookers. His professors sighed whenever he handed in slightly crumpled assignments, and his friends half-joked about how he needed to carry a four-leaf clover or a lucky charm at all times.

Then, one evening, as he was leaving the library after a particularly long and frustrating study session, he noticed something strange. A pair of golden eyes watching him from the shadows near the entrance. He stopped, blinking in confusion, but when he looked again, whatever it was had disappeared.

Shrugging it off as exhaustion, he continued home. But over the next few days, he kept feeling that same presence—watching him from rooftops, peeking from behind corners, always just out of reach. It wasn’t frightening, just… odd. Almost like something, or someone, was looking out for him.

It wasn’t until a week later, when he was sitting on a park bench after yet another embarrassing day, that he finally met him.

A soft meow broke the silence, and Beomgyu looked down to see a sleek black cat sitting by his feet, its golden eyes locked onto his. The cat tilted its head slightly, as if it had been waiting for him to notice.

Beomgyu frowned. "Have you been following me?"

The cat let out another quiet meow, stepping closer and rubbing its head against his ankle. Its fur was smooth and well-groomed, and something about its presence was oddly calming.

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Well, at least you’re not laughing at me."

The cat hopped onto the bench beside him and curled its tail around itself, blinking at him with an expression that almost felt… knowing. Beomgyu hesitated before reaching out, brushing his fingers gently over its head. The cat let out a soft purr, leaning into the touch.

From that moment on, things were different. The black cat—who Beomgyu eventually named Yeonjun—never left his side. And strangely, ever since Yeonjun appeared, his usual streak of bad luck seemed to lessen. No more tripping over nothing, no more spilled coffee, no more missed buses.

Beomgyu didn’t know why, but with Yeonjun around, he felt… lucky.

At first, he chalked it up to coincidence. Maybe he was just being more careful because he didn’t want to accidentally step on Yeonjun or trip over his tail. But as the days passed, it became clear that something more was at play. His luck wasn’t just improving—it was almost unnaturally good.

He found money on the sidewalk, right when he needed change for the vending machine. His assignments seemed to go smoother, and even his professors started to praise his work more often. His friends noticed too, pointing out how he wasn’t running into as many disasters as before.

One afternoon, while walking back from class, a sudden gust of wind blew a stack of papers out of his hands. Normally, they would have scattered everywhere, but Yeonjun leaped up, batting at the pages mid-air, and somehow they all landed neatly at Beomgyu’s feet.

"You did that on purpose, didn’t you?" Beomgyu muttered, eyeing the cat suspiciously.

Yeonjun just meowed, tail flicking smugly before jumping onto Beomgyu’s shoulder.

Beomgyu huffed. "Alright, I’ll admit it. You’re my lucky charm."

But even luck came with its own complications. Because soon, Beomgyu started to notice something else—Yeonjun wasn’t just lucky. He was protective. And he didn’t like other people getting too close to Beomgyu.

One evening, as Beomgyu was talking to a classmate outside the library, Yeonjun jumped up onto the table between them, staring at the other student with narrowed golden eyes. The classmate laughed nervously, reaching out to pet him, but Yeonjun swatted their hand away with a sharp paw.

"Yeonjun!" Beomgyu gasped. "That’s rude!"

The cat merely meowed in protest before leaping onto Beomgyu’s lap and curling up, his tail flicking in irritation. The classmate gave an awkward chuckle before excusing themselves, leaving Beomgyu staring at the feline in disbelief.

"What’s your problem?" he muttered, scratching behind Yeonjun’s ears. The cat only purred louder, nuzzling into his hand as if to say, "You don’t need anyone else. You have me."

Beomgyu sighed. "You’re so weird, you know that?"

But despite Yeonjun’s jealousy, Beomgyu couldn’t deny it—life was undeniably better with him around. And he wasn’t sure he wanted to go back to the way things were before.
